The Amazing Johnathan is known for his unique blend of comedy and magic. But the current situation he finds himself in is not an illusion, it’s deadly serious. What an upsetting start to the week, this is one of the funniest guys ever in my book. I remember him in the old SF days, he was shocking and dangerous and totally hysterical.

The Amazing Jonathan is/ was an absolute original. One of THE best. Really sorry to hear about his health problems.Damn.
Funny to hear him mention Kevin Matthews. Another very funny guy.
Get him on.

Great podcast as usual.

Glad I got to see Amazing Jonathan live. Great show and sad to hear about his health issues but he sounds like he has had a good life and appreciates it. I’m new to the podcast but love it. Big fan of your comedy, TV show and the podcast.

Thank you Marc. Amazing Johnathan is a very interesting guy.  One of a kind. I feel bad for anyone who didn’t get to see his live show.

Scott July 14, 2014 at 8:12 pm

Gosh, I hadn’t thought about this guy for years, and it struck me just how goddamn funny he is/was.

Another stellar podcast…and the latest episode of Maron is really great TV.

Good show, Marc. Johnathan is so truthful and earnest and endearing in that way. I especially appreciate that Jonathan is friends with Carrot Top. Thank goodness CT has reputable friends, and thank goodness that real entertainers know and appreciate other, real entertainers, despite any ostensible lack of coolness—I harbor a serious disdain for that measure of social or professional viability. Johnathan and Carrot Top and Boomer live!

Another great Michigander.
When he told the story about his meeting with Merv Griffin—stuffing the silverware in his clothes then saying, “Merv, I want you to know that things are just fine for me”—CLATTERCLATTERCLATTERCLATTER
I laughed my balls off.
Marc, I want you to try to improve as an interviewer. Listen to how you interrupted him with trivial questions when he started talking about his disastrous set as a magician in high school. I could just perceive from the tone of his voice that the story was interesting, then you cut him off, then he returned to the story almost ten minutes later unprompted. And the story was as interesting/funny as I anticipated. You do it fairly often, and I hope that you will eventually learn when you should just back off from someone verbally.

Listening to the Amazing Johnathan WTF now. Amazing, touching, sad, interesting. But how is it I’ve never heard of the Amazing Johnathan?  I can’t believed I’ve missed him all these years!  Checked out some YouTube videos and can’t stop laughing!

I forgot that I listened to a couple of minutes of this episode yesterday, so when I got to the end and Marc says that thing about the jackets I thought “God damn, are you still talking about those fucking jackets from the other day?!?”

Cat_Admirer July 16, 2014 at 1:38 am

Thank goodness you got this one done—in case Johnathan does get into that car wreck he presaged (about which I was sorry to learn). This is a great conversation with a comic that doesn’t get mentioned enough. Can only hope the number of comments doesn’t reflect the listens. I haven’t seen his act in at least fifteen years, but I feel like I remember almost every bit he did.

He mentioned getting remarried in spite of his prognosis, and that’s especially cool after seeing the proposal:

I think it should be mentioned, Johnathan has a really good podcast called Burn Unit.

This goes straight onto my favourite WTF episodes list . . . great interview, made all the more poignant by Amazing Johnathan’s looming demise.  Being able to laugh at, and be funny about, such a serious subject is incredible. I think Marc handled this interview impeccably.
