The very first live WTF that I attended, Fred Armison and Bill Hader were guests.  It was a memorable night for many reasons but getting to see Hader do his Alan Alda was fantastic.  I’m excited to listen to this ep right now.

What a particularly enjoyable episode to listen to! Bill’s great! WTF continues to be a winner of a podcast.

Maron, your tone is indeed manic at the front bookend of this episode, having just returned from Chicago and its character(s). And if the Hader interview actually took place immediately upon the heels of this mania, then a good interview with another good comedian is what seems to level you out. I vicariously felt the sensation of your return to contentment, and though this brings me some momentary happiness and laughter, listening to two successful, funny people only reminds me that I’m only planning for the next lifetime. But that’s the sympathetic protagonist to whom I was referring in an earlier post, the guy who continually rediscovers the present and his acceptance of it.

Martin Short may be a good person ,but his comedy is grating to me. Bill Hader, still has a “normalcy” of humanity that comes across in his characters.  the choice of preference here is easy for me.

Fantastic interview!

Hey Marc,
I don’t always listen to your opening rant but I did this time, and what caught my attention was your “destroying” of alcoholic idiots (your words).  I think what you’re feeling in these situations is tension.  Because 25 years ago you would have been just as high.  I don’t suggest that you ever release these recording of drunks. Its always hard to listen to.  It looks bad on everyone.  Especially you.  I’ve been in bars, plenty… where someone, too drunk, needs to be escorted out.  The problem is that you’re fucking with real people’s lives.  They don’t need the humiliation for having a disease.  Addiction is real and alcoholics can’t stop or wont stop. You’ll look like a celebrity who attacks sick people.  But you can just do it anyway.  because that shit makes you laugh. Cell phone recordings of shit like this ruins people’s careers.  “Marc Maron got me kicked our of a comedy club and put it on youtube.” might become a common phrase.  Then again you could always put it up on Gawker.

smitty August 10, 2013 at 5:40 am

I don’t understand and have never understood, the addiction “as disease” model ?  this from a fellow sufferer[alcoholic] mind you. its just an illogical construct.  hey, whatever works that doesn’t hurt another, more power to you[ I guess].  I just don’t think that learned helplessness, a big recovery meme ,is the way to go across the word.  drugs do of course lead to disease ,but is the compulsion to do them the disease itself?  I don’t think so.  it’s a behavioral issue, which doesn’t minimize the problem and tragedy of it,one iota.  to retrofit “disease” on to everything we don’t fully understand ,is a dangerous concept, I think.  it has led, to the drug co’s coming up with made up crap such as “oppositional defiance disorder:” that has in turn, led to the drugging out of mostly young boys. ‘Brave New <fucking> World’ is here…wake up !!

Someday a WTF listener will edit together all the Lorne Michaels and Mitzi Gordon impressions. There are literally dozens.

Great Episode! I’m a huge fan of Bill and this podcast, and you two together made this episode a truly enjoyable hour while I work.
As someone who has lived in Tulsa my whole, I have to let you know I do not own any cowboy boots and neither does any of my family or friends. Marc, if you are that curious about this lovely city I would LOVE if your tour stopped by so you can check it out first hand. Yes if you walk in a godforsaken Walmart here you will absolutely find the toothless hicks that scatter throughout this state, but there is definitely more diverse group then rodeo loving cowboys.

Thanks for helping the hours pass while I work! Big fan of your TV show as well!

Good conversation, except when Bill mentioned he was briefly the stage manager for a show on the Playboy channel that had live phone sex, and Marc asked not a SINGLE question about that. A simple, “Holy fuck, what was that like?” would have sufficed. Hader must have been thinking, “Is he really not going to ask any questions about the phone sex show?”

Sean August 15, 2013 at 4:48 pm

I’m not sure what the problem is with destroying drunk idiots.  There is a huge difference between people who drink and people who are drunk assholes.  There is almost always that one man or woman who feels that everyone should hear what they have to say.  When I spend decent money to see a set, I’m not paying to hear what anyone else has to say.  I want to hear the comedian/comedians.  No drunk has ever made a set better… Well except for maybe Dane Cook.

Too bad Hader did those commercials. SNL will always be his best work.  Byee bye Joe Piscopo.

I could listen to this episode a 2nd time. Best one I think ive ever heard. Bill was relaxed and funny and great guest. Sometimes “origin” stories are not very entertaining. This was NOT one of those times. I want a milkshake and cookie
