Stoller was one of my absolute favorites of all the “Dr. Katz comics.” Looking forward to this episode and clicking play right NOW.

Excellent,really excellent!

Da King January 19, 2012 at 7:03 am

ha ha Nerdist bites.

Da King January 19, 2012 at 7:04 am

the big one.

Bleh January 19, 2012 at 7:41 am

The thing with Nerdist doesn’t really surprise me.  Hardwick is a fucking douchebag.

@filthyrichmond January 19, 2012 at 7:59 am

Follow Fred! = @Fred_Stoller

DanielA January 19, 2012 at 10:51 am

Fred-dy! I’m a college ca-ga-wa!

Felipe January 19, 2012 at 11:52 am

@Bleh: He’s talking about Matt Mira and not about Chris Hardwick, though…

DanielA January 19, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Hardwick is to nerds as Kevin Costner is to the Lakota Sioux. Wookie pelts look an awful lot like buffalo…

jimjim January 19, 2012 at 1:17 pm

i love Fred Stoller.  Remember his character “Stenographer Fred” from the squiggle vision show “Science Court”?  I’ve been hoping he’d get on the podcast since I started listening.  Thanks Marc and Fred, this was a great, interesting, and funny episode.

Todd Mason January 19, 2012 at 1:47 pm

I hope there’s a certain amount of shtick to Stoller’s insecurity, because in his appearance in this episode he seemingly almost couldn’t help being acute and funny. I’ll definitely be looking for that film, and hope to see more of him in the various media…a comedy album, or full-length ebook or even a regular book, indeed…

Ah, c’mon, man, an *apartment*? Don’tcha have the good sense to room with STAR TREK guys in your youth?

Todd Mason January 19, 2012 at 2:01 pm

(And, I should say, I remember his work on all those shows such as KATZ and the standup showcases back when.)(And I remember when Paul Sand was considered enough of a draw that his series, on CBS Saturday nights between ALL IN THE FAMILY and THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, was actually called PAUL SAND IN FRIENDS AND LOVERS…and it was a pretty good show by me as a kid, but it wasn’t pulling in quite ALL IN THE FAMILY numbers so they axed it, rather than move it and see if it would do OK elsewhere.)

John Y January 19, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Big fan of Fred. Even bigger now that I learned that he was born in the same town as me the day after I was. Same year. But it is not about me.

This almost got to Gallagher-level bitter near the end.

Jed January 19, 2012 at 9:49 pm

Really surprised Marc didn’t know Paul Sand - he played the Tourette’s chef on Curb Your Enthusiasm! And Ronnie Schell?!? C’mon Marc, old time comedy nerd!

SuperLungs January 19, 2012 at 10:02 pm

Old Dr. Katz fan here, and I’ve been looking forward to hearing *all* the alums of that show sit down with Marc, and this interview with Fred Stoller did not disappoint… he’s every bit as nebbishy and awkward as his comedy persona would suggest, or else he’s just got a lot of stamina.

And hooray for him calling out poser-nerds! In fact, I will go a step further: Marc, you are not a nerd; Fred is. That’s right, I said it.

MeMeMe January 19, 2012 at 11:27 pm

This was so awesome.  I think Fred’s an amazing talent.  I’ve always thought the nerdy comic in Ghost World (the comic book) was based on Fred.

Laura January 20, 2012 at 1:55 am

Sheez, Fred mentions Paul Sand and I immediately go back to my childhood. Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers? Cuz even as a kid I’m into weird-ass obscure comedy…

Gloria January 20, 2012 at 8:44 am

How great was it to hear Fred???!!!  Weirdly, wonderfully nostalgic.  And even I remember Paul Sand, Marc.

Joe Tily January 20, 2012 at 10:49 am

This guy was adorable - great episode Marc

Mike January 20, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Thanks giving a rare talent like Fred the chance to reintroduce himself to fans of comedy. I, like others, had forgotten about him but could instantly picture him when I heard his voice. He had a gem in one of his 80’s performances that went something like, “I tried getting into lifting weights…. but they were so heavy” that always comes to mind when I try to gear up to get back into the weight lifting thing myself.

I started reading his kindle single this morning but had to stop. It’s too good and I need to get some work done. Definitely worthy of the premium 1.99 price…way to go for it Fred.

Please publish the rest of that book. It will be devoured.

Grace January 20, 2012 at 2:31 pm

Fred Stoller was hilarious.  Loved his song! And I think he needs a hug.  He out “Woody Allens” Woody Allen. Good episode Mr. Maron.

Kate January 20, 2012 at 5:02 pm

Marc is the greatest interviewer ever !!!!!
I always look forward to hearing the podcast and can’t wait to hear him make even uninteresting people entertaining.
But damn what a great show when he has a REAL talent on !!
Fred Stoller is so honest, funny, entertaining and interesting.
Great episode Marc and Fred. Thank you - I’m going to go and try to watch anything I can find with Fred in it.

Stoller was great in the Secret Code.

Annie January 22, 2012 at 8:03 am

How can Matt MIra not be considered a nerd? He seems like a sweet guy…what could he have done to Fred to be called out like that on Maron’s show??? Hum. Oh well, great interview! He should do a Louie CK and stream his movie online. Do it!

TH January 22, 2012 at 11:07 pm

Agree 100% on the nerd issue… It’s nice to hear someone else talk about it.

Ann January 23, 2012 at 12:53 am

I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard at a song.

But Fred shouldn’t hate all the Sutherlands just because Donald was having a grouchy day.

And Paul Sand? Marc, how do you not know him? He played Barbra’s Streisands ex husband in ‘The Main Event’. Do a google search. You’ll recognize the face, (it’s true that it’s the name some people forget….)

Carter January 23, 2012 at 5:31 pm

Burn enough bridges and you will find yourself alone on the island.

Ken January 23, 2012 at 6:22 pm

I love Fred, but wow his negativity and insecurity really overloaded my fuses. He sets himself up perfectly for all the problems he talks about, and then wonders why things are that way. He seems to be very self aware which is good, but doesn’t use that self awareness to resolve his life issues.

Marga January 26, 2012 at 12:57 am

Always a Fred Stoller fan. Appreciated his Grove, Tower Records, Book Soup regimen when things weren’t going so good. Sweet guy. Unforgettable.
My sushi guy was sneezing last night… even worse than a sick flight attendant. Not to brag.

Russ January 26, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Great episode as always, Marc.
Based on the auto-tune thing, it sounded like Matt Mira set up a Nerdist podcast with Fred, but when Chris Hardwick got to Fred’s apartment he had second thoughts about devoting an episode to Fred (using his small apartment as a proxy for Fred’s fame level, and therefore, interest to his audience).  Dunno, that’s my read.
I did love when Fred said that Hardwick wasn’t a real nerd because he was into “cool robots.”  Seems like there might be levels to nerdism.

See you at the Wilbur Theater in Boston on 1/127

christine January 27, 2012 at 11:31 am

I was so disappointed in Hardwick that I blogged about the nerdist & Fred Stoller thing after listening, and typed out the lyrics of Fred’s song - after a week of high traffic, it was pointed out to me by a reader that the post had been deleted last night!  I put it back up (had it saved on my phone), but I think maybe the nerdist’s “node” was out of joint.

Don’t piss off the fake nerds.

Daniel G. January 27, 2012 at 1:01 pm

@Ken I agree with this wholeheartedly, I’ve liked his comedic bits when I’ve been able to catch them.  From the entire interview he sounds like his mother had a terrible lasting influence on him, everything he does is horrible, never put yourself out there for fear of rejection etc…. He seems to have gotten past some of it, but to lash out at other “nerds” to put them down because what they are into at the moment is the fad?  It’s the kind of messed up elitism that other geeks and nerds have with one another that I’ll never understand, because you didn’t have the same kind of isolation and awkwardness I had when I was younger you can’t call yourself that.  Or the audacity that a person grows into themselves and isn’t shamed into not caring what others think because they enjoy “cool robots”, comics, freaking erector sets, D&D, Red Dwarf, whatever it is.

It smacks of a kind of jealousy that they themselves can’t break out of their own shell because the fear of rejection and ridicule is so immense for them it can cause just suffocating amounts of stress.  As for the auto tune song that’s a pretty shitty thing to do to just up and cancel like that judging by their living space.  Just bad form all around.  Good episode.

Andre P. January 31, 2012 at 10:37 am

The grade-school bullshit about nerds who aren’t really nerds because some nerdy things are popular now was where the episode ended for me. When I hit that part, I didn’t care what else Stoller or Maron had to say.

I hope the next episode will be better.

Apparently, Stoller’s episode of Nerdist goes up next week.
