Thanks, Marc!  Awesome interview with a brilliant man, and the new site looks damn fine.

Knew in general of his mental issues, but never heard him discuss them in detail. How incredibly sad to have to endure such awful parenting, and how inspirational that he was able to deal with their toxicity by making something meaningful and wonderful out of his life.
As he sings on one of his albums, “Look at that crazy moonbeam—that’s all I got to say.”

Ah, Marc, what a warm and tender moment that he respected you enough to share so much with you. His home and personal.  He was presenting you with this slice of life gift that he obviously holds dear.

I remember watching Jonathan Winters on Carson.  A true genius.

Da King May 10, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Brilliant. Winters is a genius and Mark did a great job showing that. Just finished listening to a Mr. Media podcast and who pops up at end to ask ‘Why the fuck are you listening to Mr. Media?’ ha ha good one Mr. Maron

New website is looking good, like not having to open 3 pages up to listen to each podcast. This was possibly the best one ever and you barely spoke just chuckled like mutley in the background but who can blame you with such a genius. I hope you somehow get jonathan winters back on

Marc’s interviews are as good as it gets!
Been a long time addict.

Maybe add a photo for the kiddies?

That was so good!  Heartwarming to hear Jonathan Winters - used to watch him with my dad.  Amazing how just as funny he is today.

I should listen again… can’t figure out what J.W. means when he tells the Doctor a lie in order to get out of asylum.  Great, great podcast as always.

As a little girl I would sneak out of bed, put a blanket over the TV to cut the light, and watch the Jack Paar Show.  My favorite guests were Jonathan Winters, Oscar Levant and Alexander King. Surely this was a big influence on me, I learned to love insanity in the form of honesty.

Russ McClay May 19, 2011 at 3:40 am

So great to spend some time with the wonderful Jonathan Winters! I’m sure he enjoyed your visit as much as you did Marc.

Wow, great show.  i loved the dialogue monologues

Malcolm May 30, 2011 at 9:59 am

Wow! Amazing. Escaping the electro shock was a harrowing tale. That is an example of the incredible power of his imagination, to use it to literally save his own life. The psychiatrist riff at the end brought me to tears from laughing so hard. You should help set him up with his own weekly podcast. That would be amazing!

This is great.

Coping strategies. Defense mechanisms. The world calls them ‘gifted.’ In many ways they are. And they’re survivors.

THANK YOU Marc Maron! In one fell stroke you have not only given us one of the most cogent interviews with a genius (on par with The Actor’s Studio), but you have corrected a painful piece of mis-information about his first trip to the psychiatric ward. Up until your program, the only source of information on the subject available online was still reporting his supposed mast climbing incident as fact. I took it upon myself to correct that information. Go here to see what a great thing you’ve done: http://foundsf.org/index.php?title=Frigging_(Mad)_in_the_Rigging

hey I am a newbie fan and not someone prone to commenting and such - but this was a truly moving interview and I wanted to express my appreciation for your masterful touch with such a brilliant man.

Charlie July 20, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Marc, that was so great! Thanks man!

I think that most psychiatrists want their patients to do well… I like Jonathan Winters a lot but it doesn’t make sense to want patients to fail…. of course I am no professional
