Episode 474 - Tom Arnold

It’s not every day that Marc refers to a guest as “a handful.” But not every guest is Tom Arnold. The veteran comic and actor discusses the difficult past he had to overcome to make it into the business, as well as the challenge to define himself as more than just the guy who was married to Roseanne. I didn’t think much of Tom Arnold in the 90s other than him being Roseanne’s husband/ex-husband-alcoholic/drug addict- mediocre comedian/actor…boy, did this podcast shed a new light on my perception! Great podcast!

Just chiming in to concur with the above. I never really dug Tom Arnold before, but this interview was great and now I think he’s pretty cool. A bit frantic and breathless smile but cool.

I’ve always dug Tom because he wears no mask. He’s been brutally honest about himself and never courted media outlets or journalists for an advantage. By letting his ADHD and his past abuses hang out he’s helped so many. I’ve always known him as separate from his exwife but I guess that’s gonna be his stain to clean forever, eh (she’s a great comedienne but she’s also the Courtney Love of comedy).  He’s difficult to keep up with when he’s rolling but, knowing that going in, I was excited to see you post this one, Marc. What puzzles me is, most people with his history struggle with depression or summat ; he seems honestly happy. Still unsure how that was achieved.

I like Roseanne and this guy. Fuck the haters.
I like Tom mostly because, as other people have stated, he is just amazingly honest and sincere.

Like many here, I never thought much about Tom Arnold and had a vaguely negative impression of him from the Roseanne days, but I recently saw the movie he mentioned, “Happy Endings”, and was really impressed by his performance in an unexpected role - a mild-mannered, lovelorn middle-aged dad.

Great interview.

I liked his story about his abuser and how he dealt with him. That was pretty good. Any dysfunction that the tabloids portrayed him as having in the past now makes sense given his early life experiences. Its always disheartening to hear how long it takes someone to overcome abuse and how much it can sabotage any happiness or success before it gets resolved, if ever.

Catching up on some older ones… Sad I skipped this one! Really good, Marc. Frantic honesty is a good mix.

Since Tom mentioned him… Definitely Try and get Joel on. Us MSTies would love it. That dude’s a genius.
