Episode 473 - Jon Ronson

Author and journalist Jon Ronson provided Marc with a lot of conversation points through his books, including Them: Adventures with Extremists, The Men Who Stare At Goats and The Psychopath Test. Jon and Marc mine that material to discuss conspiracy theorists, hoarders and victims of public shaming. Also, Andy Daly pops into the garage after papering Marc’s neighborhood with fliers for his new Comedy Central series, Review. I saw your special and show on netflix and thought they were great. So I started listening to WTF. I love it man. You’ve got yourself a new fan here in SC.

Big fan of Jon Ronson so I was looking forward to this.

British people you should interview- Armando Iannucci.

I went in hoping for another Adam Parfrey type talk, but this was great on its own. The hoarding thing was spot on and hilarious. How about Loren Coleman?

When I majored in psychology we learned about psychopaths inside and out. Then when I graduated and returned to go to film school the directing teacher said, “avoid stories that focus on psychopaths because for whatever reason every other student’s screenplay focuses on them.”
So it’s kind of played out to me. The 9/11 lunatics are much more untapped and fascinating to me. But you guys moved away from them and returned to analyzing psychopathy quickly. Honestly, 9/11 crazies deserve their own spot in the DSM’s.

Really want to see how an Alex Jones WTF would play out. Anyway, really enjoyed this ep, but I love conspiracy talk so there was a lot for me to dig on here.

1. I suggest that Marc has it backwards when it comes to ‘911 Truthers’ and Judaismand/orChristianity - you have to create a very elaborate conspiracy story (100 times more astonishing) to REJECT their bibles, history etc.

2. I absolutely CRINGE when I hear liberal media types sneak in ‘right-wing’ or ‘extreme right-wing’ tags on Alex Jones:  Alex Jones and 911 conspiracy nuts (many the same showing up at Occupy Wall Streets) spent 7 solid years accusing Bush Jr and conservatives/Republicans of mass-murdering Americans and creating a ‘fake war’ etc.

3. One of the best episodes I’ve ever heard on WTF (which says so much) and wow did I ever enjoy this one!
Great guest, great interview - fantastic thanks so much you neurotic genius Jews!

Man… have you ever seen someone cry and moan more than Justin? Poor baby must feel threatened all the time.

Justin March 07, 2014 at 2:01 am

Hi Bleeding - you didn’t think I was doing any of those things but it does tell me you felt your world view was threatened by my post. It made you a little upset that I corrected some of the things you think ‘work’.
Anyways, stop talking now.

Great episode! In fact…my favorite episode to date.

This guest encapsulates everything that is wonderful and unique about WTF. Mark, you definitely have a knack for finding these human gems to introduce us to.

Jon Ronson is eloquent, funny and his insights into public shaming really made me think about our society in a new way.

The Alex Jones story is legendary. Thanks again for all that you do to keep up WTF-nicks occupied during the work day.
