Episode 471 - Billy Gardell

Mike and Molly’s Billy Gardell took the long road from stand-up comedy to television success. After years as a hardworking road comic, it was only when Billy’s life was at it’s lowest point - thanks to addiction, a crumbling marriage and a career he thought had bottomed out - that Billy got the big break that had eluded him all those years. This episode is sponsored by Vimeo, Stamps.com and Catch a Contractor on Spike.

I can’t wait for the Jason Ibell interview! Make it happen!

Listen, Marc, I just wanted to say that back when you aired the interview with Moon I thought you two had amazing chemistry. Later when you said you were dating again and were dropping hints, I was hoping it was with her. I nearly cried listening to your story about how you’d always had a thing for her on Valentine’s. And today listening to Moon speak during your intro, I started falling in love with her too.

All I’m saying is it’s your lives, but I’m rooting for you guys.  Also, sweet interview with Billy Gardell.

I loved his comments about L.A. comedy.
Obviously it’s even worse than he described for open micers here—it’s why professional comics (especially Ari) tell the newer guys to NEVER start here. I was at a professional comedy show here a year ago, and we were on middle act #5 or 6 (L.A. peeps know what I’m saying), and I was getting tired of waiting for the headliner, so I just started sketching something on a napkin. One of the middle acts brought up the fact that I was drawing two or three times. At one point I said, “really? THIS is bothering you THAT much?” I should have added, “you know that I’ve performed with 7 guys staring at phones (during the whole “show”) and one guy literally snoring to my immediate right, right? My act was forged in the DEPTHS OF HELL, and THIS is bothering you??”

So happy for you, Marc! You two have excellent chemistry and I hoped that Moon was the mystery lady once you started hinting at her. Enjoy it - you deserve it.

Hi Marc! Very happy for you and Moon. I really hope it works out for you. One thing that’s hard to listen to is you keep referring to your old relationship and how much happier you are now to be in an “adult relationship”, etc…It sounds very bitter and hurtful towards your ex. If you’re happy, let go of your anger towards her and enjoy your life now. We listeners were with you when you were with Jess and have an affection towards her too. We don’t know what exactly went down between you two, but out of respect for both Jess and Moon, you should let it go.

Good show Marc,  I enjoyed Billy,  I enjoyed realizing that I have done things that I didn’t want to and knew where not the best idea but have done them anyway. and it was good to realize we are not alone in this and its okay to get help.

and to Melissa’s comments,  I don’t think Marc was trying to be disrespectful towards Jess,  who, I agree, we followed along with Marc and their relationship and have good feelings towards her.  but My take is Marc was trying to take a shot at himself when he used the “Adult relationship”  but I can see how it could be taken as a swipe at Jess.

We hope for the best for you Marc,  Opening yourself up as you do for our entertainment I am sure has a few drawbacks,  but we are pulling for you, Jess and Moon.  good luck.
