Episode 441 - Illeana Douglas

Illeana Douglas plays Marc’s good friend on “Maron” but here in the garage they’re really just getting to know each other. Illeana tells Marc about kicking off her acting career in films like Goodfellas and Cape Fear, what she learned from her relationship with Martin Scorsese, and why she gave up on stand-up comedy. I really loved this episode. Illeana Douglas is such a talented actress and is so under-rated. She is one of those names that I trust completely (meaning I will see anything that she’s in because I know it will be interesting). So great to hear her process. Would love to check out her movie show that she mentioned. Didn’t know about it before. I think the struggles with casting that she alluded to (and the current climate of the movie industry) are shown well in HBO’s “Seduced and Abandoned.” It’s pretty depressing really. It makes you wonder how anything compelling gets made.

I’m really looking forward to this one - haven’t listened yet - but I’ve been watching Ileana Douglas entirely too closely from the beginning.  See, the one thing I’ve had a very difficult time getting past, no matter her role, is that she has this absolutely, utterly, kick-ass body.  Honestly, since the beginning, it’s been beyond me how anyone in any scene with her can maintain a character, continue the lines, without at some point stepping back and saying aloud, “Jesus, you KNOW you’re kinda making everyone else look bad with that absurdly perfect body of yours, right?”

I feel badly for it, shallow for it, lecherous for it.  But my God, it’s like she was built to the original concept design’s specs, and everyone since then has been expected to pretend NOT to notice.  She’s got a resume packed with 1st-class, prestige films and productions, and there I am leering at her.  I apologize for my weakness, Ms. Douglas.

Illeana could have been a cast member of SNL.

I loved this episode.  I now have a girl-crush on Ileana Douglas.  Sorry you couldn’t get more out of her at the beginning, but you tried.  Good talk anyway.  Looking forward to reading her book.

Great interview.  Now you can say there’s only like 4 people that post on this board.

I honestly think that you are one the best interviewers I have heard…not just based on this particular interview…this just happens to be the one I’m currently listening to, but I feel like you are so great at what you do because you are emotionally invested.  You get as much out of it as they are putting into it.  Does that make sense?

As far as what you are going through personally, I think that you are doing what’s for the best, and handling it in an amazing and healthy way.  I think that it takes a certain amount of courage to stand alone for awhile, especially when you are someone who has a tendency to be in relationships.  Keep it up Marc.  You are amazing.

It’s so fun to listen to smart people talk to each other.  Thanks for putting something good into the world Marc.
