Could have done without the tiresomely unfunny transphobic bullshit from nobody filler guest “Big” Jim Oakerson. What a douche.

Keeg November 06, 2013 at 9:29 am

Gary I believe you are the unfunny nobody. Let me think about that. Yup nobody cares about your opinion. Your the douche for thinking people care what you think. Great show Marc.

Kyle November 06, 2013 at 10:09 am

Keeg: I care about Gary’s opinion. He’s certainly allowed to have one as well.

Maybe being a transphobic hack who tells the punchline 1o seconds into the “story” is well received where you come from, but not in Montreal.

Maybe try being less rude to people who disagree with you.

John November 06, 2013 at 10:22 am

Kyle everyone there was laughing except you and Gary. I’m with Keeg, Marc and everyone else who was laughing IN MONTREAL(try and listen as your Montreal point is wrong).

Pretty sure Kyle and Gary are the same person as they made the same stupid points and phrasing. (Trasphobic hack)

Perhaps you should be less rude to people you disagree with. If you don’t like the comedy turn it off.

Good day Sir.

Gary November 06, 2013 at 11:12 am

@Keeg: I was not trying to be funny—I was being frank. My being a nobody would not diminish my ability to identify other nobodies, so that’s an irrelevant criticism. Whether or not anybody cares what I think is irrelevant to whether or not a care to speak my mind. I was not seeking your approval, fellow anonymous internet moron. If you don’t care about my opinion, then why take the time to respond? That would seem to suggest that you really do care, and that you think that other people will care that you care. By your own reasoning, and I am being charitable to call it “reasoning,” that makes you a douche too, huh?

@John: Maybe you should try listening with better headphones because it did not sound like the room was with him “Big” Jim. Sounded like he lost them at “scat.” Regardless, your appeal to the masses argument does not make him objectively funny, and it does not make his story any less transphobic. Kyle and I are not the same person, we just both happen to have a vocabulary that includes the term “transphobic.” This may be an exotic enough term in your mind that no two separate people could possibly know and use it, but it is actually a fairly common term used to describe a certain kind of bigot who tells ostensibly funny stories like “Big” Jim’s. Google it.

I feel good knowing that I touched a nerve with a couple knee-jerk bigot apologist. Thanks, guys!

Greg November 06, 2013 at 11:50 am

I’m actually Gary, Keeg, Kyle and John. YOU’VE ALL BEEN RUSED.

sydney November 06, 2013 at 1:23 pm

The transphobic comments coming from big Jim were unnecessary and hackey.  He could have told the story and made it humorous without marginalizing a misunderstood group of people. However, he has a right to say what he wants to say and call it comedy.  And I have a right to say that it’s transphobic and not funny.

I enjoyed the other interviews.

P November 07, 2013 at 6:00 pm

Big Jim whoever can go fuck himself.  What a stupid and unfunny turd that was shat upon an otherwise awesome show.

Guest November 07, 2013 at 8:08 pm

But Jim Norton would have happily fucked her, or worse, am I right? One hears all kinds of crazy things on these shows.

nickster November 07, 2013 at 9:41 pm

I thought Big Jim was the bright spot of the show.

Joe November 08, 2013 at 3:54 am

Wait a second…. “transphobic”.... I’m guessing its the “fear of transgenders”?.... well, hmmmm…. well, lets think… if your next door neighbor was a nice guy, polite, kept to himself, didn’t do anything to harm you, but he turns out to be a serial killer…. are you suddenly a killerphobic because you want nothing to do with that guy? Probably not. Because he kills people, and being killed is something that most people don’t want done to themselves. Its a violation of your rights. Your right to live. And see, that’s the thing. If someone presents themselves as something they are not, would it not be natural to have a certain amount of fear towards that person when you learn what they really are? I’m a heterosexual guy. If a girl offers to touch my penis then I’d find it hard to refuse. But if a guy offers to touch my penis, I’d say no. Now, I’m not comparing transgenders to serial killers, I’m just making a point. Its about honesty. Would I let my neighbor, the serial killer, into my house if he was carrying a knife? Hell no. But would I let my neighbor, the nice guy, into my house carrying a knife? Sure. He’s got a nice set of knives. Wants to show me how well they can slice up an onion. But then he comes in, says he wants to touch my penis, and I say no. Is that because I have an irrational fear or is it because I’m heterosexual and don’t want a guy to touch my penis?

Anyway, Big JAY Oakerson was hilarious.

r.r.r. November 08, 2013 at 1:55 pm

Big Jay Oakerson is TRANSPHOBIC. He ruined this episode, and I would have thought Marc Maron would have known better. Horribly disappointed.

L.A. November 08, 2013 at 2:29 pm

Totally transphobic, incredibly disappointing.

P November 08, 2013 at 3:48 pm

@Joe Um, yeah you ARE comparing transgendered people to serial killers.  See, the thing that a serial killer is lying about is. . . killing people, and the thing that trans people are “lying” about is their gender. (They’re not actually lying, but that’s a longer discussion)  Sorry, having a penis is not the same thing as killing someone.  Though to hear Little John dipshit talk about it, it is.  Fine, he made himself and his own stupid xenophobia the butt of the joke, then that would have been different, but half of his jokes are about how gross the trans person’s body was.  How about this.  A woman doesn’t tell you that her dad is black, and then, after having slept with you, she does.  Then you do a whole bunch of jokes about how gross mixed race people are.  Cuz, you know, her not telling you she’s mixed race is like a serial killer not saying that he kills people.  Totally the same thing.  And we all know how original racist jokes are right?  How insightful and hilarious and really unique.  Awesome!

I just don’t believe the story at all, it sounded like a complete fabrication - he ran out the shop? That is the punchline? Was the whole story just to reassure he isn’t in any way attracted to dicks? Ran out the shop my ass! I bet he took it all AND LOVED IT!

Harold C Hanger November 11, 2013 at 5:57 pm

BUT - I loved the episode!! It was brilliant - loads of different characters, thought it was one of the best Live shows. Well done Marc!!

juliet bravo November 12, 2013 at 4:35 pm

I used to skip the “live panel” shows as just superficial comedic samplers, but I’ve listened to several now, and I’m always impressed at how well Marc creates a sense of real intimacy and vulnerability in a fairly pedestrian format, and this was the best so far.  Seth Myers was funny, Tig Notaro was funny and heartbreaking, Trevor Noah was smart and funny and eye-opening, and Eddie Izzard was, as always, brilliant and funny.  Big Jay, not so much, bless his heart.

Méchant Martin November 13, 2013 at 6:01 am

I was glad to hear Eddie Izzard talk about this new generation of french people who listen to American comedian with subtitle cause am one of them, I start to watch the rare Louis CK YouTube clip that were translate but as I wanted more I started to listen others without subtitles and I discovered that I fucking understand it ! and that’s how I ended up here listening to your amazing podcast, keep going at congrats you are international Mr Maron.

Joe Tily November 13, 2013 at 7:09 am

Classic live WTF . . . they are always good. BTW, good save on the East or West Germany bit Marc!

Greg/Keeg/Gary/Kyle/John November 14, 2013 at 3:26 pm

Big Jay.  not funny.  loves cock.

MWP November 15, 2013 at 1:57 am

Wish the show could have gone on longer than an hour.

Nope November 27, 2013 at 12:11 am

I completely see both sides. I thought Jay was really funny when I was at the recording, but now that I’m at home I feel pretty uneasy about his cruel stereotyping. In the end, I think it’s a great funny story, but he should have emphasized the prostitute angle instead of putting down trans women (whether it was intentional or not).

Little Pat December 16, 2013 at 6:52 am

Big Jay Oakerson’s only offense was being unfunny / wasting my time. I don’t really care about any other perceived insensitivities. He tried, to the hyped Montreal audience he mostly succeeded, to others he was an asshole. Whatever. So many more worthwhile things to be upset by.
If I hated him I wouldn’t be mentioning him (i.e., giving the hack more publicity).

Katherine January 10, 2014 at 5:04 pm

Occasional but long-time listener here. Thanks for good interviews with a lot of interesting and funny people. But I have to echo others and say that Jay Oakerson’s story was cruel, predictable and unfunny. Not to mention self-defensive, i.e. “I don’t even know why I was there! (I’M NOT GAY!)”

JJM March 18, 2014 at 1:13 pm

Geez, Jay Oakerson was cringeworthy. He sounds like he was trying to copy Jim Norton but just came off sounding like a school yard bully.

Transphobic, not funny and an unfortunate departure from the more highbrow comedy I’ve come to expect from wtf.
