Episode 399 - Kristen Schaal

Kristen Schaal is a perfectly charming guest in the garage. But that’s not the posture she adopted for her recent comedy special. She tells Marc why she deliberately constructed the most awkward television special possible, as well as how her career changed after Flight of the Conchords, and what it means when casting directors ask for “a Kristen Schaal type.” This episode is sponsored by LegalZoom, Audible, Adam & Eve, and Hulu Plus.

How could you not mention her work on Bob’s Burgers!?
I know you don’t watch cartoons, but hey, doesn’t Jessica watch the show? Bob’s Burgers is the best primetime cartoon going on right now and a stand out against the usual drek on Sunday nights on FOX.
For shame! :(

Your truly,
Minnie Von Testaberger

I couldn’t help hearing Mabel during the whole interview.

marc and jess should not get married and have a child. they are children. they cant eat a meal in public without having a full blown war with each other. don’t be foolish kids!

I know that not doing your research is a point of pride/running gag with you, Marc, but Bob’s Burgers is not just a cartoon..look at the talent in the main cast and the guest’s a who’s who of comedy. This is like when you interviewed Jim Florentine and you breezed over his main project/exposure with That Metal Show. At least take a peak at a wikipedia page because I love your interview style and would love to hear someone ask about projects like Bob’s Burgers.

Love Kristen . . . i was so glad they expanded her character in FOTC Season Two.  That was a really fun and interesting interview. Thanks Marc.

identifying with a well adjusted funny person would apparently seem to harbor some barriers..

I don’t normally comment on this board, and I’ve listened to this podcast for a long time, but I’ve been a huge fan of Kristen Schaal, Jon Benjamin, Eugene Mirman, and the works of Loren Bouchard for a long time, and Bob’s Burgers is the least remarkable thing any of them have ever been involved in. I keep trying to give that show a chance wanting it to be good, but it’s just not funny. Kristen has had a glorious career outside of that show. And horses, like Ms. Schall, are beautiful. Don’t tell the man how to conduct an interview.

Jesse June 22, 2013 at 6:05 am

I can imagine Kristen Schaal leaving after this interview and thinking, “man, I wish Marc Maron would have asked me about Bob’s Burgers.”

Kelso June 23, 2013 at 9:07 pm

Man, she is the most unflappable, humble, amiable person.
He did mention Flight of the Conchords and Bob’s Burgers briefly btw.
It seems like he’s less concerned with specific roles, and more interested in her as a whole.
