WTF Podcast

Episode 255 - Big Jay Oakerson

Big Jay Oakerson did not take the traditional path into comedy. Of course, being a bouncer for stag party strippers and a dress-up Elmo for children’s birthday parties isn’t the traditional path into anything. Jay regales Marc with his wild road stories and chronicles the rise and fall of his infamous closing bit. This episode is sponsored by Stamps.com. Smoked bologna / smoked dog food ~ pass. Then, the Flaming Lips…the whooers…Poviching…you excel as you continue to interview yourself. Don’t stop. You are truly priceless Maron. wink

Wait a minute, are we supposed to be keeping you updated whenever we dream about you?  I’m new to this loving Marc Maron thing.  I’m pretty sure I did have a dream about you recently but I don’t remember how it went.

Ellen February 20, 2012 at 4:35 pm

Just discovered your podcast today, have been laughing out loud for 20 minutes.  I paused it to look you and Big Jay up.  Feel like I just hit the motherload, will go back and listen to the banked podcasts.  Thanks for making me laugh and thereby making my day better.  Really enjoying what you do Maron smile

Scott February 20, 2012 at 7:51 pm

I absolutely LOVE hearing these kinds of stories!

WTF Forever.

Bill Smith February 20, 2012 at 8:32 pm

This dude kills, never laughed so hard at a WTF podcast.

ziggy February 20, 2012 at 11:15 pm

Very funny. Even funnier because of how Mac was laughing but wondering if it was OK to.

pillar26 February 21, 2012 at 12:18 am

I made the mistake of listening to this on my ipod in public and I choke laughed so hard I scared the people surrounding me at Coffee Bean.  I will spend tonight looking up everything Jay Oakerson has done.

Jimmy February 21, 2012 at 12:30 am

I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. I’m black, and I loved his black impersonation, because sadly there is some truth in it and its not mean spirited. Its just truth. Which makes it funnier. I almost cried laughing. Seems like Jay knew that environment. If your jokes are coming from a good true place and your not a racist or sexist, people will pick up on it. You won’t have to explain. Which showed in Jay’s great storytelling. As far as Marc not knowing if it was ok to laugh I don’t think that was the case.  And yes, there are some black people who tell jokes that way, and some who don’t (i.e. Chapelle)
Awesome Show!!!!!!!
Now, I’m about to go eat some Red Blobster and Scrimp!

Dan Buskirk February 21, 2012 at 12:49 am

Super funny show, classic stories.

Jared February 21, 2012 at 10:51 am

Great show on Saturday! I was at the first, apparently tamer show.

I lived a few miles south of the Purina plant a few years ago, and let me tell you, there’s nothing better in the morning than a freshly brewed cup of coffee and the scent of freshly baked dog food. Yum.

Never been to Leo’s before, but I think I’d pass on the smoked bologna myself. It just sounds like it would taste like… well smoked bologna.

If you ever do another show here (which would be awesome), hopefully you’ll have a bit more time to discover more than our world-renowned puddles and dog food.

Anyway, been listening to WTF for a while now, and it was great to finally see you live!

I’m glad I was able to scratch it off my “life list.”

Alex February 21, 2012 at 3:31 pm

Very, very funny. The stories had me in tears. Listening on my ear-buds at work, between such scenes as the “internal fight” at the racist bachelor party and Red Blobster and Scrimp and the Elmo gig gone wrong, I was in such a state my co-workers thought I was having a nervous breakdown. Thanks for that. Made my day.

Cat_Admirer February 21, 2012 at 5:02 pm

Mark me down with all those who were laughing in public listening to this episode. Big Jay easily makes the top 5 funniest anecdotes from a WTF guest, albeit “funny” in a sad, frightening, Jerry Springer sort of way, but funny all the same. Sounds like a real nice guy, too. Thanks Marc and Jay.

Steve J. February 21, 2012 at 5:28 pm

Without a doubt, the most laugh-out-loud episode in the series. I was not aware of Jay before this, but I’ll never forget him. So glad I subscribe to WTF.

Chris Taylor February 21, 2012 at 6:02 pm

Marc, please do another episode with Big Jay Oakerson in the, not-so-distant, future.  His stories are hilarious!  I will never again pass a Red Lobster without the words “Skrimp at Red Blobster” echoing through my mind.

Ann February 22, 2012 at 12:20 am

Great raconteur

Joe Tily February 22, 2012 at 9:06 am

Funny episode - I enjoyed his relaxed and candid demeanor . . . great interview Marc.

bdawg February 22, 2012 at 11:31 am

Marc, thanks for saying that the term “Bucket list” is fuckin annoying and yet another stupid “in” phrase that the masses appropriate from shitty mainstream movies and pop fuckers.

now excuse me, i need to go “get my work on”!  then punch myself in the face for typing that!

ps, Guy Feiri or whatever is a picky annoying asshole.  He is squeamish about stupid shit and close minded about food.

bdawg February 22, 2012 at 1:18 pm

ok, also this guy Jay is pretty cool, great stories.  yes, the skrimp and duck sauce.

Jason February 23, 2012 at 2:42 am

Have to agree with many of the comments, been listening to the podcast for a while now and I can’t remember laughing out loud so hard at any other episode.

jimjim February 23, 2012 at 10:12 am

definitely one of the funniest episodes ever.  hearing jay talk about his shitty jobs/gigs back in his early days is just so funny.
thanks marc and big jay

Catseye February 23, 2012 at 10:59 am

LMAO!!!  The next time I go to Red Blobster, I’ll think of Jay Oakerson and probably giggle a lot.  Definitely one of your best podcasts.

Pallas February 24, 2012 at 4:55 am

I laughed so hard I cried, I laughed so hard that it hurt. One thing that gave me a twinge was Jay referring to the women as “animals.” I have a feeling I’m being too sensitive about it, but there it is.

Jessie February 24, 2012 at 11:14 am

Great episode.  Korn fucking sucks, but I’ll forgive him.

nag73 February 24, 2012 at 11:17 am

I’d never heard of him ‘till this podcast (I’m in the U.K.), but he’s my new comedy hero now. The way he tells these stories so matter-of-factly and doesn’t start each one by saying something like, “Oh, you should hear this one, it’ll kill yer”, I could listen to this stuff all day.
Cheers Marc.

VinylT February 24, 2012 at 2:57 pm

I laughed myself incontinent. Good thing I was driving a rental.

Tip: avoid the white Chevy.

Ben February 24, 2012 at 3:29 pm

I’m listening to Big Jay’s comedy album right now after listening to this podcast.  It is mainly dick jokes.  He should put out an album of just telling stories like the ones heard here; I would buy that in a minute!  Skrimp Skampi at Red Blobster is classic!

TJ February 24, 2012 at 4:10 pm

Cat food factories probably smell just as bad, Marc.

barny drood March 04, 2012 at 12:31 am

not funny, sad, and pathetic….......this is one for the circular file.
the world is too fucked up right now, to get off on decadent bullshit.
gotta wash my soul out with paint thinner, after listening to this fucking crap.

Brendon David May 09, 2012 at 10:13 am

Great episode!  I’ve never hear of Jay before.  I have never laughed out loud so many times on one of your episodes.  Oakerson has a great natural delivery.  Those stories were fantastic.  I love when he continued to refer to the crazy drug-ridden strippers/hookers as “those animals”.  LOL.  Classic.
