Episode 238 - Michael Ian Black

Michael and Maron have issues. Marc sits down with comic and actor Michael Ian Black to sift through the rubble of their past in order to find out why they’re so damn awkward around each other. You won’t find tension like this outside of Christmas dinner with your in-laws. This episode is sponsored by Pro Flowers and Adam and Eve.

Love the episode. You guys should do a buddy cop movie. lol

Mike December 22, 2011 at 6:35 am

Wow.

It’s really hard to like Michael Ian Black at all after listening to this. I had no real opinion about him either way, but it’s officially been swayed in a negative way. It’s going to be hard to be entertained by him again in the future.

Respect to Marc for staying pro and trying hard as hell to be personable. Black was standoffish and seemed defensive of ANYTHING Marc brought up (even Florida!). Was EVERYTHING Marc said a personal attack? Am I missing something?

What The Fuck indeed….

Amy December 22, 2011 at 9:29 am

Well I was entertained merely because Black is so tightly wound and terrified of himself and I totally love the honesty going on here.  Two totally different personalities chewing it out saying the shit we all want to say to those we are “friends” with but they may drive us nuts.  I don’t think Black’s a dick, he’s just…kinda dorky who wants people to like him but he also wants everyone to think he doesn’t care what they think.  I’d like him.

Amy December 22, 2011 at 9:51 am

wow Black…you get under my skin—like when you hear that high-pitched noise in your ear all day that no one else notices—like that.

Bob December 22, 2011 at 10:09 am

Wow! This guy does stand-up? Pretty thin-skinned for that.

Daniel December 22, 2011 at 10:42 am

When you’re dead? Wow, just kiss already!

Love the tension, great episode.

Diane December 22, 2011 at 11:05 am

The only good thing about that interview was Marc. I never could get into Stella because he and Showalter are so stiff and unfunny that even if the jokes were good, it’s hard to laugh at the jokes because the messengers were awful. This interview only shows that the stick is still wedged tightly up Michael Ian Black’s ass.

jimjim December 22, 2011 at 11:22 am

haha, thanks Michael. thanks Marc.  You two should definitely do a tv show together.  such a funny dynamic

Crate&Trauma; December 22, 2011 at 11:56 am

Marc and Michael need to do a new version of the “Odd Couple” together.  These guys are so funny together.

John Smith December 22, 2011 at 12:06 pm

“Wait…That sounded intelligent”

Maron’s a dick.

Coop December 22, 2011 at 12:37 pm

Great show with two guys who display their low self opinion in very different ways.

chris December 22, 2011 at 1:05 pm

This is really, really unconfortable - only 29 minutes in and I’m looking for the end already.  I do find it funny that MIB called Maron on his passive aggresive comments about different comedians and characters. He obviously has listened to the show a lot. I know Maron doesn’t think he’s doing it most of the time, but me and a friend always try to predict what Maron’s backhanded compliment is going to be based on the guest who’s scheduled.

Jim December 22, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Marc.  Dude.  I love the podcast and love your work—but Black is 100% right that you keep trying to make the interview about your personal baggage.  This is the first time I’ve ever heard you be truly shitty to a guest.  I think you just need to own up to the fact that you don’t really like Black or his work—something he gave you many opportunities to admit—rather than doing this Mean Girls shtick where you try to bully him with barely-masked aggression and backhanded compliments.

jack December 22, 2011 at 1:54 pm

I agree with Michael about Marc’s comments on Michael’s work sounding belittling. Saying “it works for television” or “it’s popular” when you could say “it’s good” or “it’s funny” makes it sound like you have problems with it but don’t want to say.

AD December 22, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Wow. That was un uncomfortable but fun interview.

Guest December 22, 2011 at 4:09 pm

What kind of a man is so ill at ease that he looks down on someone eating chicken wings at 3 o’clock in the afternoon in Florida, which I am sometimes wont to do. Connecticut can keep its Mr. Schwartz, Maron nailed it.

jamesllegade December 22, 2011 at 6:12 pm

I don’t know what the fuck everyone is talking about… this was brilliant. I feel like i just listened to oil and water mixing successfully.

Hannah December 22, 2011 at 6:27 pm

I liked the interview and am a fan of Black’s, mainly from Stella. Here’s his This American Life segment where he talks about his father’s death: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/438/fathers-day-2011 (was kind of hoping Marc would’ve mentioned it)

Mikal December 22, 2011 at 8:10 pm

I agree with jamesllegade. This episode was amazing! These two have the most interesting dynamic and it is great to hear them hash out 20+ years or resentment and awkwardness towards one another.

Julian December 22, 2011 at 11:16 pm

I enjoy the podcast and thought this was great, but I have to side with Michael here, as others have said in the comment section. He was perhaps overly sensitive on a couple of points but most of the issues he brought up were very accurate and insightful critiques of Maron’s interview style.

I think that some of the listeners that are vehemently denying this are perhaps a bit oblivious to the digs that Marc regularly takes, and don’t notice it because his guests usually don’t have the balls to call him out on it. I don’t think that Michael’s gripes will be new to listeners who engage with the subtext of that which they consume.

Ian Anderson December 22, 2011 at 11:27 pm

Are you guys kidding? MM and MIB have a fantastic chemistry and they know it.

SpaceMayor December 23, 2011 at 1:35 am

This is the most real interview between two acerbic comics I’ve heard. I love every second of it, every little detail. And the best part is that people have picked sides. As if two grown men who work in the comedy business are at each others’ throats. This is an amazing interview, not because either of them are anyone, but because they are genuinely funny people. That’s my favorite part of comedy; funny people exist like a species that can only thrive through strange environments.

lil ricky December 23, 2011 at 10:26 am

Marc has evolved into a dildo salesman.

Rodney December 23, 2011 at 10:59 am

Very interesting episode, possibly one of Maron’s most passive-aggressive interviews. Some of the lines of inquiry sounded double-sided, blurring the line between what he *used* to believe about Michael Ian Black and perhaps *still* believes.

BRENDA December 23, 2011 at 7:02 pm

Thanks for sharing Marc. Keep coming back.

Scott December 23, 2011 at 7:15 pm

Sometimes it’s hard to like someone who can see through your bullshit and isn’t afraid to call you on it. I think this is the case for both Mark and MIB. Makes for an amzingly awkward and intense interview though.

bob penisworth December 24, 2011 at 12:00 am

Maron came off like an asshole in this one. I feel like his lackluster stand up career is always the elephant in the room.

MPG December 24, 2011 at 7:06 am

I listened to MIB’s new comedy album.

Cancer is funnier.

The End.

rob Dickey December 24, 2011 at 11:44 pm

comedians are often funny. Hey…..if you don’t got nothin nice to say, then dont say it. Say, hey Michael, you look like a pissy gay architect, and Mike could say, hey Marc, you look like Bruce Derm with anti social personality disorder. ...seeee itsa funny but nice…..its nice to be funny.

Brules Rules…..For Your Health

Keiko December 25, 2011 at 9:12 am

Wow, Marc just seems so aggressive and resentful.

thecooz December 26, 2011 at 8:18 pm

“A lot of people say you’re an asshole…. are you?”

What an interview technique!

Russ McClay December 29, 2011 at 9:18 am

Michael Ian Black has a lot to learn about himself.  it’s so obvious how much you’ve grown, Marc and changed within yourself for the better in contrast.  Great interview!

jim stansel December 29, 2011 at 9:28 am

you people are ridiculous. so funny that you’re all taking sides here. it’s two guys having fun with some mild resentment they used to have toward one another, and going as far as possible with it. it’s great.

WW December 30, 2011 at 10:38 pm

The WTF podcast should be re-named after Marc’s favorite phrase: “On Some Level, with Marc Maron.”

choppedliver January 01, 2012 at 10:48 pm

Who the fuck is Marc Maron and why did Michael Ian Black waste his time with this conniving weirdo?

Jordan January 02, 2012 at 2:22 am

@choppedliver: Marc’s album outsold Michael’s. Just sayin’.

@ several others: The side-taking is hilarious. I hope everyone keeps missing the point for my entertainment.

Bazaa January 04, 2012 at 9:50 pm

@choppedliver:  Michael Ian Black knows who he is…he said he listens to every episode.  He has good taste.

Mark Movagh January 08, 2012 at 4:27 am

Great interview. These guys poked at each other in the context of the solid respect they have for each other.  You can hear it clearly.  Marc also makes it clear of his love and respect for MIB in his intro.  Sometimes, it seems that when Marc talks about his past asshole-ishness, it is unclear to his guest that he is describing the past, and then he has to explain, as he did here.

Ken January 23, 2012 at 9:15 pm

I never found The State to be funny.

Ken January 23, 2012 at 9:23 pm

I forgot about Stella! That show wasn’t funny either.

WinsomeWenona February 02, 2012 at 6:22 am
