Episode 232 - Henry Phillips

Comedian Henry Phillips can’t put down his guitar. He tells Marc about his songwriting process, his influences from Ben Folds to Black Sabbath, and his most enduring muse—a gang-banging heckler who haunts his thoughts. Plus, Marc joins in with some blues-riffing of his own. This episode is sponsored by Comedy Central and Audible.

Marc Maron, you are lovely

jimjim December 01, 2011 at 11:56 am

Henry’s movie sounds pretty good. i added it to my netflix queue. also i will admit i lol’d at “wasting away in diarrhea-ville”

Matt(midwest) December 01, 2011 at 3:13 pm

good singin mark

Alex December 01, 2011 at 3:33 pm

Great episode. Loved it when Marc and Henry were both jamming.

Henry Phillips is amazingly talented and I highly recommend watching Punching the Clown. Very funny with a lot of heart.

Danielle December 01, 2011 at 4:33 pm

You should play guitar on the show more often! That was great

Yasmin December 01, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Hey Marc, I love you, but I gotta say, I found you very irritating at the beginning of this interview. Your excited nostalgia would frequently cut Henry off and inhibit him from expanding his ideas and sentences.
Still think you’re great, though. And your singing and guitar playing was awesome!

Yasmin December 01, 2011 at 4:44 pm

were awesome*

Bob December 01, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Man, that blues is so white it’s…...really white with just a hint of blue. Like, just barely blue because it’s so white.

Zillah December 01, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Love the playing! Beautiful blues! Loved Henry, will be watching him on netflix.

ziggy December 02, 2011 at 12:33 am

Enjoyed listening to him talk but as soon as he played the songs wondered how anyone would think that’s funny and could sit through even a few minutes of it.

air oil separator manufacturer December 02, 2011 at 3:21 am

Air oil separator are used in the systems which have back oil problem of the compressor, such as the system’s number of compressor is different from the number of indoor parts . The air oil separator includes horizontal separator, vertical separator and spherical separator. In the separation process, the centrifugal force plays an important role.
In addition, there is a filter called fuel water separator with heater. Through the electricity heating mode, it can heat the diesel which is condensing in the fuel water separator and through the fuel water separator. This can melt the wax membrane of jams mesh , ensure diesel smoothly through the filter for us to start the machine. It’s especially suitable for cold region diesel vehicles. So I advise you to see this china air oil separator supplier.

Only about 20 minutes in and one of the first guests I have never heard of but keep thinking its a guy I saw on Leno once - a young guy who never actually plays the guitar? Leno loved him. Enjoying this interview so far!

Also, a funny thing I’d like to mention - some of you may know I am Marc’s hardcore right-wing conservative fan. Last month I donated 2.00 and I hate to say it but I had to roll some shame eyes as not a single one of you so-called liberals could top that in non-merchandise free donations to the podcast.

Today I’m throwing down $3.20 and how much you want to bet (once again) not one of you so-called left-wing Obama-loving Occupying Wall Street ‘social progressives’ tops me. I’d love to be proven wrong but I have a feeling I’m rolling ‘you hypocrite’ eyeballs at you guys again this month?
$3.20 paypal donation to the podcast - thats the number to beat lefties!

archie bunker listens to WTF

Guest December 02, 2011 at 8:06 am

That’s great Justin. And after President Obama is re-elected, we can listen to WTF together while I’m driving you to the FEMA internment camp.

Bret December 02, 2011 at 11:25 am

Holy shit Maron! Who knew?

Fuck theses haters. That was some awesome playing! If this whole comedy thing tanks you could always fall back on your guitar chops.

As always, great show. I hope to see you in Minneapolis soon.

Jimmy December 02, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Check out the episode Bring the Rock from July 2010, Marc does two complete songs. A Dead tune and a Velvet Underground tune.

Noam Chomsky December 02, 2011 at 3:24 pm

Justin, shouldn’t you be creating jobs or something? Seriously, you have a lot of time on your hands, not to mention a large chip on your shoulder.

Noam Chomsky December 02, 2011 at 3:29 pm

By the way, Justin, I just donated $5. Let’s get a big ol’ childish dick-swinging contest going about who can donate the most. We’ll make Marc rich while making ourselves poor, and we can feel all self-righteous and holier than thou. That’s what it’s all about, right?

I’m off now to read Bakunin to the dope-smoking hippies playing drums down at the local Occupy Walmart. Check ya later, gator.

Noam Chomsky December 02, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Delusions, Inc. Ha! Sweetness.

joshua-p December 02, 2011 at 4:53 pm

One of the best WTFs ever. You need more musical episodes. Henry Phillips is hilarious!

Justin December 02, 2011 at 7:32 pm

How ironic that multi-millionaire commie-loving elitist Noam Chomsky is the only one willing to put his money where his mouth is and one-up my $3.20 with a fiver. (though still less than my 2 month total). I still doubt any of the 99% camped-out here on WTF grounds can do more than you. Just stating the facts is all.

Jim December 02, 2011 at 8:17 pm

I love your show Marc, but seriously “Where they black guys?” Even though they were Latino, who cares? They were just irritating and that’s all that matters. Besides that, great show.

Jim December 02, 2011 at 8:43 pm

Damn. I meant “were”. The wine must be kicking in.

joshua-p December 03, 2011 at 8:09 pm

Watched “Punching the Clown” because of this interview. I think Henry Phillips has earned himself a new life-long fan.

Andy Pants December 04, 2011 at 1:40 am

Isn’t the idea that people should donate for the podcast a libertarian concept? A liberal would want Marc Marons podcast to be a state sponsored program.

Jesus December 04, 2011 at 4:37 am

Anyone notice that Bill Hicks isn’t funny? At all?

Jim December 04, 2011 at 10:40 am

Had to sneak in the brain dead, right wing political crack, huh “Andy Pants”? Does that define you? You need to get laid. Oh I forgot. Your a Libertarian.

Justin December 05, 2011 at 1:08 am

Andy and Jim. Say whatever you want to each other but in the end the fact remains it was your Stephen Harper/Herman Cain conservative right-wing rural Christian type who has donated the $5.20 (and Marc is worth far more),
and,
not one of you (neither of you) has contributed a single penny. Both of you would fit in well at an OWS taking donations, eating free food, not giving a single dime but enjoying WTF podcasts on your $1200 iPads (and using free bandwidth at that).

And yes I agree with Jesus that Bill Hicks aint funny and never was. But did Jesus donate a dime for the much funnier Henry Philips podcast?

Andy Pants December 14, 2011 at 9:36 pm

Wow, for a bunch of commenters on a comedy podcast you sure are a bunch of humorless pricks.

jimjim January 07, 2012 at 10:56 am

watched Punching The Clown last night. Hilarious! laughed my ass off.
