Did Chris eat a 7 course meal during this interview?

john w November 03, 2011 at 11:54 am

Great interview. He is right about politics.

jimjim November 03, 2011 at 11:59 am

excellent interview.  i can’t get enough of hearing two comics talk about comedy

leah November 03, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Loved the interview. It’s nice to hear Chris Rock just shootin the shit with Marc. All I was thinking at the end though, was that I hope Marc ran in to Chappell and we’ll have an interview with him to look forward to.

Beelzebud November 03, 2011 at 12:51 pm

Small beef with the podcast.  For the past 3 episodes you guys have stopped tagging the meta data of each episode.  You used to put the episode number and guest in the meta-data on the mp3 files.  Now it just says Mar Maron, and in a directory full of the podcast it makes it very difficult to quickly identify each episode.  Please put the meta-tags back in.  They were there for 221 episodes!

Erica November 03, 2011 at 12:53 pm

Thank you for this interview Mark! Chris Rock gave a lot of insight on Eddie Murphy! Can you interview Bill Burr?

Joe Hoyle November 03, 2011 at 2:05 pm

This may be your best.  Just started listening recently and it just gets better and better.

Beelzebud November 03, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Great interview!  Chris Rock has always been one of my favorites.  What are the chances of getting Dave Chappelle to sit down in the garage?  I doubt he’d do it, but man I’d love to hear that interview!

Thomzas November 03, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Loved it! I could listen to several hours of you two chatting - the enthusiasm and energy you share is really enthralling.

Adam November 03, 2011 at 3:23 pm

I absolutely love WTF and Chris Rock is one of my all-time favorite comedians, so I was bummed that I couldn’t reach the end of the interview because of Chris’s nonstop eating, and all of the parts where he was literally just chewing and making mouth noises for seconds at a time before being able to respond, and then talking with a full mouth.

Maybe some people don’t mind it, but eating on mic is like nails on a chalkboard for me. Like having someone sit inside of your ear and chew, or alternatively, like being inside of their mouth. I assume it was a matter of Marc being polite and letting it slide, since he was at Chris’s place. I can’t think of any other episode of WTF that has on-mic eating, actually.

I actually stopped listening to one of my favorite podcasts (Comedy & Everything Else) because they would regularly eat on mic and it infuriated me every time. Podcasters, please, PLEASE note how annoying this is for many people. There are no words that I dread more at the beginning of a podcast than “Oh cool, the food is here.”

Hate to leave negative words, as WTF is one of my top 3 favorite podcasts. That’s why it was such a bummer that Chris ate throughout the entire interview. It was a great interview otherwise, as always, but I just had to shut it off once I reached my cringe limit from the chewing and swallowing sounds.

Love ya, Marc. More frustrated with podcasts in general that eating on mic is still so common in the podcasting world after all these years. BTW, the Norm Macdonald episode was one of the best things I’ve ever heard.

Keep up the incredible work; you’re in a league of your own.

Jcar November 03, 2011 at 3:51 pm

Very good episode.  Ive been waiting for a Christ Rock interview.  I liked his characterization of Bush as a “Cable TV president” and Democrats as wanting revenge—very true I think.

Joe Tily November 03, 2011 at 3:55 pm

Eat away chris . . . “how much for just one rib?” . . . i knew this was gonna be good and i was right . . . . sucka.

BIRDY November 03, 2011 at 4:37 pm

Adam, I know what you mean! I actually stopped listening to “Comedy and everything else” FOR THE SAME REASON! I’ll stil check it out if they have a good guest, but for the most part they would sit there and EAT every episode and it was so distracting. and gross. Please, refrain for ONE hour from shoving things in your mouth. or take a break and get some food.

R November 03, 2011 at 11:25 pm

If it was that easy to be a comedian, why we’d all be comedians!

Cat_Admirer November 04, 2011 at 12:59 am

Controversy truly follows wherever Rock goes. It’s still way too early to call, but this already gets my vote for the funniest comment thread in the history of the podcast. Congrats to all the mouth-noise peeps for making it happen—and for overlooking the smacking in hundreds of podcasts past, coming not from the guests but from the host! How have you lasted this long through so many cookies and nicotine lozenges? I’ll have to check with Janeane and make sure, but it’s pretty clear you’re all racists.

Crate&Trauma; November 04, 2011 at 1:51 am

Another great interview Marc!

Justin November 04, 2011 at 1:53 am

For some reason it bothered me less that he was eating but more that Rock was too far back from the mic.
Of course, the dilemma being, if Maron were to kick up the volume I suppose then the chewing sounds are (even more) unbearable.

But anyways, really good interview imo and although nothing necessarily groundbreaking or new I really did appreciate it. One thing I like about Rock, you know we use this expression sometimes “He is just.. himself”. Maybe we use that a lot but I think Chris Rock is a perfect example of someone who is always just himself.

Anyways, great stuff!

bryontreece November 04, 2011 at 9:16 am

The eating really annoyed me, I have to say.  He wouldn’t be doing that on Letterman, or Stern, or Real Time, or Oprah, etc., etc.  It was really just rude & disrespectful to do to Marc, in my opinion.  If you’re too busy to fit in an audio interview without having to chow down, then just decline, Mr. Rock.

RB November 04, 2011 at 10:03 am

I listened to the whole thing with head phones and really didn’t notice the eating that much. I guess my ears aren’t very sensitive. I expected the worse reading these comments, but was not annoyed at all. Good interview.

Gloria November 04, 2011 at 10:21 am

Not so much an interview as an eavesdrop on 2 comedy veterans shooting the shit (and eating).  This was so much fun to listen to.  I’ve always liked Chris (forgot he was on In Living Color) and he comes across as a stable, down-to-earth guy for all his success.  He also seemed to have a real respect for Marc.  Thanks guys.

edfreeze November 04, 2011 at 11:20 am

I agree with bryontreece completely. and johnathan you’re way off the mark and over the top.
You’ve gotta treat everybody equally and show respect for the interviewer and HIS AUDIENCE and what Rock is saying to Marc’s audience, which is growing quite large, is, I don’t really have respect for you - not enough respect to not talk with my mouth full for 60 minutes.

Listen, of course we’re all Rock fans, but I also did not think this was close to the best of Marc’s interview, I thought it was superficial and felt as if they kept dancing around subjects but just kinda bounced off of them, never getting in depth or plumbing the personal depths Maron is famous for.

Cat Man Dork November 04, 2011 at 12:52 pm

Try and keep up with the news, Frank. Or even this podcast. Broad-sweeps on race are this culture’s new specialty.

Mark Movagh November 04, 2011 at 1:18 pm

edfreeze,
Interesting point about the superficiality.  True, this interview didn’t get inside Rock too much, but he did reflect about his trajectory, and offered thoughtful commentary on his craft and the business in general.  Some comics drag a bit, but Rock didn’t lose me on any of it.

I understand why the food smack sounds bother some folks but here’s another angle:  to some of us, breaking bread together means you feel at home with someone.

Catseye November 04, 2011 at 1:52 pm

Not as interesting, or wild, as I’d hoped it would be.  Chris Rock has always seemed like a shallow, one-note comic and this interview just confirmed it for me.  As for his chewing and talking throughout the podcast, about what I’d expect from someone like him.

R November 04, 2011 at 2:59 pm

If you went into the interview thinking that, Catseye, you’re likely to get what you wanted out of it, which was chewing and talking from a shallow, one-note comic, DUH

frank November 04, 2011 at 6:07 pm

who cares about the eating?  what i like about WTF is the casualness.  this isn’t charlie rose or 60 min.  it’s two comics hanging out and talking about work and their lives.  marc does the podcast from a garage for christ sake, filled with cat dander and god knows what else. there was one episode where the guest was allergic to cats and was sniffling the whole time. it was hilarious.  so chris rock eats some food while they talk in his hotel room.  what nerve he has! gimme a break.

lighten up franci

sorry about the name calling.  Stuff like that just drives me crazy.  Peace to all, including Frank.

Justin November 05, 2011 at 12:57 am

Good Gad what the heck happened here? You know the strangest thing is that Chris Rock is really quite a one-dimensional basic guy who doesn’t seem to have a lot of controversial or antagonists thoughts about anything.

nickgatt November 05, 2011 at 10:57 am

Enjoyed this interview.  Never noticed Chris eating.  Maybe it’s because I didn’t listen to it with headphones.

David November 05, 2011 at 11:29 am

Great interview. Personally, I didn’t notice the couple of seconds of Chris chewing here and there until everyone in these comments seemed obsessed with it. Then that’s probably because I was listening to all of the insightful, thought provoking things a comedic genius was saying and not wringing my hands over minutiae.

James November 05, 2011 at 11:34 pm

Intelligentsia? ... Okay, he’s earned that. The shift between Chris Rock’s stage persona and his natural persona is really interesting. That alone could possibly change people’s opinion about his comedy, but you hardly ever get to hear him be himself like he was with Marc here.

Bob November 06, 2011 at 12:53 pm

That was a phenomenal chat, Marc. Wow. Made my morning. I thought Mr. Rock’s snacking added to the hilarity & the naturalness of the talk. Just great. Thanks again!

Todd November 07, 2011 at 1:46 am

The eating gets on my nerves and when it happens I stop listening.  Marc seems to have stopped doing it himself, and he ought to ask guests up front not to do it on mic.

Mea November 07, 2011 at 4:40 pm

I absolutely LOVED when they both geeked out over Woody Allan.  Great interview!  Keep them coming!

Mea November 07, 2011 at 4:42 pm

Oh and the eating didn’t really bother me.  Do you know how skinny Chris Rock is LOL!  Let the man eat.  I thought it was a little rude that he didn’t offer any to Marc on the mic though…. oh well.

Mike November 08, 2011 at 4:09 pm

Rock’s eating wasn’t nearly as distracting as his surprisingly frequent “up-speak” (sentences that have the rising inflection of a question but aren’t).  I can handle it when I’m listening to my kids but it’s unbearable to me when hearing it from adults.

I’m hearing it more and more among highly educated professionals at work and too often from guests on this podcast (esp. from females on the panel episodes).  Even Louis C.K. who lampoons it so well in an episode “Louis” does it regularly in his otherwise great 2 part interview with Marc. I wish I could ignore it like so many seem able to…I really do.

Jessie November 09, 2011 at 3:17 am

Wow, Mike.  You must live a miserable life to notice crap like that.

Steve November 10, 2011 at 2:38 pm

Dear Chris Rock,

Can you wait a GD hour before inhaling a meal?  Also, you talk a lot but have absolutely nothing to say.  Disrespectful to Marc and the audience.  Burn in hell.

Billy November 11, 2011 at 4:39 pm

I really enjoyed this episode until the last 5 or 6 minutes when politics took over.

1: I would never think, much less say, that our country is “a stinky bag of shit”. Is that what Democrats really think? If so we don’t need them running our stinky bag of shit into the ground.
2: We don’t need our president doing “gangster shit”.
3: I have never heard Obama say anything to make me say “We need some more of that”
4: What makes you think that GW didn’t give a shit about the people that didn’t vote for him, I hope its not because Kanye West said so!
5: Obama is not trying to be president to the whole country or he would not have raised the debt ceiling, sinking us further into debt.

Thats just my 2 cents.

OE November 19, 2011 at 4:53 am

I am new to WTF but a fan of Chris Rock. I listened to the whole show and I loved every minute of this podcast for its style, rhythm and content. It’s a bit surprising to me that some commenters collapse liking the interview with agreeing with what Rock says. To me, those are two totally different things and shouldn’t obstruct the purpose of this piece — two comedians reminiscing, discussing the business, and delving into the lesser-seen side of a great comedian. Thanks very much for this.

The hydraulic filter system have two kinds——oil filter and air filters .
The oil filters can be used to filter with the oil of impurity, maintain and clean oil, ensure the normal hydraulic system.According to different forms, filtration, the common oil filters of hydraulic system have nets type, line spacing type, paper plate type, sintering type and magnet type etc. Air filters, mainly used for filtering air into and off the tank and make the air clean. Here is a good china filters factory for you.

Sweet baby Jesus, the eating!!!

I mean, it wasn’t just a quick bite, the guy was chewing and chewing and slurping the whole time… ffs. No wonder it ain’t a premium ep despite the guy’s level of celebrity.

But, despite this, Rock was fairly insightful (through his never-ending gulping and lip-smacking).

jason December 23, 2011 at 3:23 pm

reading comments on the internet never fails to make my head hurt.

Really folks ?  ~sigh~

Trenton December 26, 2011 at 10:24 pm

Great interview - really well done.  The idea of interviewing a guy in his element, while eating is to get authentic responses versus the PC responses we get when in a studio, over bottled water.  If hearing him chew and swallow is the price I pay for authenticity and insightful info then bring on seconds:)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Laticia January 03, 2012 at 8:23 pm

Gee willkires, that’s such a great post!

Nick January 08, 2012 at 5:00 pm

Pure gold. You can’t hear this stuff anywhere else. I’m going through the WTF back catalogue right now and it’s a joy to work through.

Can I request, Marc, that you incorporate an Australian derivation into the list of WTF listener labels at the beginning? - “WhatTheFuck-knuckle”. Or maybe you’ve used it already and I haven’t heard it…

Keep it up, mate, we’re loving it out here - whether the dude you’re interviewing is eating or not.
