Episode 212 - Chris Hardwick

Chris Hardwick is not the man Marc thought he was. The Nerdist joins Marc in the garage to explain his roots in nerd-dom, why the show Singled Out was such a weird fit for him, and his understanding of why Marc had the wrong impression of him. This Hardwick guy is not worth my ear space.  There is nothing this guy says that I care about.  He’s not funny.  He’s not special in any way.  Do people like this actually think they are special in some way?  God.  Bowling?  Does he have any listeners on his podcast?  How low must your life be to spend any time listening to Hardwick.  Bowling?  Really?

Settle down Skippy.

As a nerd, this was a lot of fun.  It was fun as hell to see Marc’s nerdy side show.  My mind was blown when he was talking about the arcade games.

James M. September 22, 2011 at 12:42 pm

Skip was molested by a guy wearing a Walter Ray Williams t-shirt, just ignore him.

Chris Hardwick is a fake nerd.  A ferd, if you will.  He’s parking on the term because it’s hip these days to declare yourself one, but in reality, he’s just a hollywood shill who capitalized on a niche label, and successfully redirected the public’s faint familiarity with him from his MTV days to springboard this new branding of himself to save his dying relevance.  He’s resourceful for making it work, but by no means an actual nerd.  Hardwick is an opportunistic douchebag that realized society was beginning to see him for the empty vessel of a human being he really is, and latched on to an emerging “cool” handle to impose his shit-shell of a life over, and thus, a new career was born.  Any listener of Chris Hardwick is a fucking moron for doing so, and needs to stop.  There are plenty of real nerds out there actually worth listening to.  Quit wasting your time with this poser.

Gabe September 23, 2011 at 5:02 am

I remember this dude on Singled Out.  I remember thinking he looked really uncomfortable on that show.

Wow, Pow.  You really seem to be an expert on this fella.  Did you go to school with him or something?  Or are you just very intuitive?  What exactly did he do to you to inspire so much ire?  If he didn’t fuck your girlfriend, I really worry for your sanity.

James M September 23, 2011 at 9:15 am

@Pow - Did you even listen to the episode, or were you too busy formulating you’re condescending slam? They addressed this, and you’re completely fucking wrong.

robotpants September 23, 2011 at 10:40 am

In the Brian Pohsehn interview, about halfway in, Marc says (something like) ‘some people are true nerds and some people are just pretending’

I think Hardwick got the message at the end about vulnerability. But it really seems like everything for him is just homework and discipline. I wish he would quit “Im so happy for us all” thing that he does - that and the other attempts to display that he “gets it” (his quoting the Maron bits etc.).

And then theres this “I had him all wrong” thing from Marc.

Brian Z September 23, 2011 at 10:41 am

@Pow you’re a bummer of a human being

John B September 23, 2011 at 12:08 pm

@Pow:

Did you listen to the interview? Those issues were addressed.

James M September 23, 2011 at 1:13 pm

I think a lot of these ANONYMOUS (that’s very key) posters writing manifestos of resentment take the opposite from this show that they should. The good thing about WTF is that it’s showing a guy (Mr. Maron) who’s had a lot of resentment, come through it, and find actual joy and fufillment through understanding someone instead of shitting on them.

Brainiac September 23, 2011 at 1:26 pm

@Pow: Dude, the guy grew up in a bowling alley. How could he become anything other than a complete nerd?

robotpants September 23, 2011 at 1:48 pm

James - I agree that Marc’s approach to the interview was good and open - but I didnt get what Hardwick said that changed his opinion on him - that he did a philosophy course? (and didnt appreciate it) he was a bowling /maths whiz? I dont know much about Hardwick, apart from his appearances on various podcasts. It does kinda feel like having Ryan Seacrest or someone sit in on the alt-comedy world. But they do seem to accept him.

MichaelH September 23, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Odd to see the other side of the fence. I was introduced to Marc Maron through the Nerdist interview (locked in to listening to WTF through the Kevin Pollack show interview.).

Maybe everyone hating on Chris could check out the reciprocal podcast on Nerdist?
http://www.nerdist.com/2011/01/nerdist-podcast-52-marc-maron/

At the very least, it’s more fun Marc stuff.

I get the impression Marc assumed Chris was a smooth, well liked guy in younger life who then transitioned in to the same thing in adult life. In reality, of course, Chris always seemed to be more the nerdy kid whose good natured enthusiasm and geeky focus on things has earned him the friendships and opportunities he’s now got.

Travis September 23, 2011 at 2:49 pm

The reason why comedians accept Hardwick, is because he’s a good comedian. He does stand-up and also has a comedic band called Hard and Firm. Yes, he also works on G4, and does a podcast, but the guy juggles a LOT of stuff, and still tours stand-up. He’s talented, funny, and he seems to be a genuinely nice guy. I think he more than deserves the acceptance by many comedians, cause he’s earned it throughout the years…..

rbs September 23, 2011 at 4:48 pm

i used to listen to Nerdist alot. but i eventually became annoyed with how chris and jonah just ramble on too much and barely let the guests speak. sometimes its so bad you wonder if they intend the show to be the “Chris and Jonah Hour” and the guest is just there to chime in every few minutes.

i respect chris and what he’s trying to do, but his personality and style is just too overbearing at times. now i just cringe when he talks, because he’s almost always interrupting a guest who has something interesting to say but is maybe just a tad more shy and let him just step all over their responses.

compare that to Marc or Scott Aukerman (when not doing a bit), who prompt with good questions then sit back, chill and let the guest actually speak.

Crate&Trauma; September 23, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Who knew there was so much nerd rage out there?

Marv September 23, 2011 at 5:24 pm

1) I hate the word nerd.  It’s overused and useless.  Same with hipster now.  They’re like two sides of the same coin: It’s cool and funny to say YOU are a nerd, and cool and funny to say SOMEONE ELSE is a hipster.  Blahblahblah.
2) If I had to guess, I would say Hartwick is honest about his past and his “nerdiness” but that he only tapped back into it fairly recently in life.  So now, he’s going overboard in trying to let you really see and believe that he is a “nerd.”

But maybe that’s exactly something a nerd would do.  My head hurts.  Join me for a beer, Chris.

vadgeman September 23, 2011 at 5:28 pm

This was good, but I’m still waiting for the Don Draper episode. Whenzat handsome bastard gonna park himself in your garage?

robotpants September 23, 2011 at 6:25 pm

MichaelH / Travis - ok, fair enough, Ill have to check out his more creative stuff eventually.

listened to the interview again, love how Marc jabs at him throughout while keeping things agreeable. fuckin him and aukerman are the best.

James M September 23, 2011 at 7:32 pm

@robotpants - I don’t think Hardwick had to change Marc’s opinion about him, I just think they had a better understanding of each other. Everyone has their own opinions about what good comedy is, but Marc’s preconceived notions about Hardwick being manufactured turned out to be wrong. I don’t know how anyone who knows anything about Chris Hardwick would think he’s like Ryan Secrest. That’s just crazy to me. I dunno. I’ve been following him as a comic (yes, a real stand-up comedian) for a good while, and he’s the real deal.

Scott September 24, 2011 at 2:17 pm

Nerdist podcast is pretty good…from time to time.  Chris Hardwick as well.

Nerd, hipster, hip-hop, country western, goth,  etc, are all niche fashion marketing, especially stupid when someone slaps the word “culture” on it.  Ya just can’t live in that pigeon-box without the appropriate clothing or tattoos or hairdo or attitude.  It is all completely geared toward dumb fuckers who feel it necessary to display their pre-packaged “individuality” so that we GET WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT without actually having to get to know them.

Lazy

Keifer September 26, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Chris Hardwick definitely sounds like he was a nerd growing up, but there’s no doubt he is just cashing in on the money train by cornering that genre now. I’m very nerdy and I cringe whenwver I see Hardwick do interviews and he says “nerd” like twenty times. DID YOU guys hear him say he’s been to the Donkey Kong kill screen? I mean it sounded like to me he said he’s been there. There’s no fucking way he’s been that far lol. He only knows what it is from watching Fistfull of quarters. Anyway, I guess he’s a nice guy and I do have some in common with him, but I hate the way he has commercialized the concept of nerdiness. My favorite guys that I feel like kindred spirits with would be Patton Oswalt, Conan, Michael Showalter, ect. Because they do and say things I agree with and can relate to,not because they say “nerd” every other sentence.

Hardwick mentions ‘Being Funny’ (at about 1’11’40) with Ricky Gervais, CK and Seinfeld. It’s an hour-long HBO thing actually called ‘Talking Funny’ and also featuring Chris Rock. Real good stuff if you’re interested in The Craft of Comedy, or want to hear an Otis Redding parody.
In fact this should be the whole dam’ thing: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xip02d_talking-funny_fun#rel-page-2
