Episode 177 - Garry Shandling

Marc seeks wisdom and insight from a true comedy Buddha, the one and only Garry Shandling. Garry talks boxing, basketball, mothers, self-acceptance and, of course, Larry Sanders. Plus, Marc wonders if the Rapture actually happened without us knowing it. This episode is sponsored exclusively by Men of a Certain Age, returning Wednesday, June 1, only on TNT.

Just finished listening to the Podacast. I love the mental image of Christians shooting up through the air like little bottle rockets. To me, they all look like Trey Parker in Orgazmo. Also, I was struck by the idea that America needs to hit rock bottom.  I hope that some day, it’s no longer cool to be a trainwreck and we can move on to a sort of self-actualization phase where we re-evaluate what’s really important, and what is just bullshit.

Jeez Maron….We all know your sober and all, but would it kill ya to be able to offer Garry a drink?

Shopping list :
Booze for Shandling
Antihistamine in case Ed Helms ever comes back (poor guy, I doubt it)

The phone in bits aren’t bad, I just realized how much I hate Adam Carolla.

’ I didn’t want to make it about me, but it was touch and go there for a while ’ - Great show Marc!! Thanks.

To compare what happened in Chicago in ‘68 to what happened in Egypt is to insult the bravery of the people of Egypt. Love the Podcast, Marc.

I liked the parts about Marc. But Garry’s ruminations about the state “we” are in as a society were all on the level of your typical dorm room conversation, though maybe the college kids don’t manifest the influence of self-help/New Age rhetoric as much as Garry does. According to Garry, we as a society need to bottom out and get over our addiction to Charlie Sheen instead of focusing on his addictions! Oh, the irony of it! (In other words, dug Marc, but it was painful to listen to Garry pontificate.)

Shandling, from 0:54 to 1:02, goes from channelling classic and transcendent Bill Hicks (re: reality) to channelling Patton Oswalt as he addresses and tears apart a hooting audience member on the “Werewolves and Lollipops” album (re: silence).  And thus, I loved it.

Another champion show, Marc.  Cheers!

“It’s not your fault.”

Fantastic conversation. You are doing fantastic work, Marc.
Keep em comin’, thanks!

Marc, you really needed to do more research before this interview because you missed out on a GOLDEN topic.  The time that Ricky Gervais interviewed him is one of the all time WTF awkward moments, anyone who hasn’t seen it should view here:

certain ‘68 Chicagoans are paragons of bravery. no one is being insulted. rather perspicuous pontifications, Garry. i agree wholeheartedly. but i’m glad the people who can ignore the rest of the nation are doing well.

Incredible Episode. I am blow away by the analysis and self awareness and spirituality discussed in this episode. This is the most refreshing thing I have ever heard on a publicly accessible entertainment based talk show. Thank you so much for this Marc. I have new found respect for Mr. Shandling after this. ANYONE WHO’S SERIOUS ABOUT BEING AN ARTIST AND A RESPONSIBLE HUMAN BEING NEEDS TO CHECK THIS OUT!

I liked Shandling a lot more before I listened to this.

Big fan of the show, your comedy, and Shandling’s, but I expected some brakes to be applied, at least momentarily, when he stated that one of his first shots came as a writer for “Sanford and Son.” I’ve heard him mention this in a few other interviews, but I’m amazed that no one ever seems curious as to how the black comedians/actors on that show felt having their lines written by a kid from the Arizona suburbs. Maybe Red Foxx was the kind of guy who felt like, “Well, funny’s funny, doesn’t matter where it comes from,” but that had to have been a unique situation for Shandling. I’ve always wondered about his take and/or interactions with the cast and other writers on that show.
