It’s Tobolowsky, and his podcast is one of the finest you’ll hear. This episode gives you a good taste of it: http://www.slashfilm.com/the-tobolowsky-files-bonus-ep-faq/

Felipe February 07, 2011 at 12:46 pm

YES! I wanted to suggest you to talk with Stephen for ages, yours and his are the ONLY podcasts I listen to, he’s an spectacular storyteller, I haven’t listened to this one yet but I’m sure it’s amazing.

Lele February 07, 2011 at 3:23 pm

I haven’t heard the term “colored” in awhile.

chad February 07, 2011 at 4:03 pm

Awesome episode! I have to admit, I do get a little nervous when I see non-comedian guests. But I’m a huge Tobolowski fan, and this was a great interview and great break from the norm!

Noah Brock February 07, 2011 at 4:49 pm

What a great interview! Great Job!

Clever Nickname February 07, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Hey, it’s… that guy! Really interesting character (pun intended), uplifting interview, nicely done.

Stephen Toblowski February 07, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Some of you may know him as the asshole from Yankton.

Scott February 07, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Another excellent podcast.  BING!

Garnet February 07, 2011 at 10:09 pm

What a colourfully Zelig-like knack this actor has for meeting people. Incidentally, the wonderfully Vaughan Brothers album he refers to is called Family Style.

Destiny February 07, 2011 at 10:19 pm

Wow, what a positive episode! Between the banana cream pie story and Tobolowsky’s awesome tales, I’m feeling pretty shiny after sitting through this one, Marc.

BTW, Tobolowsky: “Colored” is not the preferred nomenclature.  Black, or African American, dude.

Pat February 07, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Yum. Banana cream pie. I would have eaten that piece.

Gloria February 07, 2011 at 11:42 pm

“colored lady”?  Really?

eLBaRTo February 07, 2011 at 11:52 pm

i saw Mississippi Burning cause of this podcast.
The man has interesting stories to tell. Good chemistry

It’s sad to see the premise of this taught hatred still exists.

it will always exist.
People need something to fight for, its a way to not deal with their shitty lives and fucked up personalities.

CTD February 07, 2011 at 11:52 pm

“Needlenose Ned”? “Ned the Head”? C’mon, buddy. Case Western High. Ned Ryerson: I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson: got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn’t graduate? Bing, again. Ned Ryerson: I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore? Well?

Incredible February 08, 2011 at 3:59 am

Amazing guest

Joe Tily February 08, 2011 at 10:17 am

Great to hear from Needlenose Ned - he plays a great bad guy. Very entertaining stories but he certainly does rabbit-on doesn’t he? As for his use of the word ‘colored’ - i find it hard to believe that people still get bent out of shape over that one. Man, i hate political correctness.

Passing Shot February 08, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Joe Tily, I’m guessing you’re not black.  STFU.

LM February 08, 2011 at 5:47 pm

I recognized the actor as soon as I heard his voice. Now I’ll remember his name, Stanley Tobolowsky.

I love Story. Loved this podcast—so many stories!

Hooray!

danner February 08, 2011 at 6:35 pm

To me, Stephen will always be Sammy Jankis from Memento.

He’s a little off on the Trey Wilson/Miller’s Crossing thing though: Wilson was going to play the role that Albert Finney would up doing.

Solomon Raabe February 08, 2011 at 6:42 pm

I’ll finish what he was saying, “In our schools, the heads of every dept. are insanely in favor of every kind of censorship available.

Another thing, Clan ID cards, I thought the whole point of the hoods is that you AREN’T proud of how you choose to behave in our society.

Maria February 08, 2011 at 8:47 pm

Great interview. So very interesting to get a better idea of this guy after seeing him everywhere for so long.
Man, did it suck to actually get up and go to my front door when I heard the doorbell ring on your end, Marc.

terwaar February 08, 2011 at 11:53 pm

Torn on this one.  I appreciate Tobo (Sneakers was great) but like his stories in small doses.  The continual output of interesting tales about anything and everything sends my skeptic meter to eleven.  Not to say he’s not being honest but it makes for an uneasy listening experience.

Maria February 09, 2011 at 12:10 am

Stephen Tobolowsky is the anti-Gallagher.

Drake Savage February 09, 2011 at 4:00 am

I like how Tobo casually tossed out how his first girlfriend had an abortion and how it screwed up their relationship.  Fuck, that dude talks about anything.

Richard February 09, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Tobolowsky can talk the hind leg off a donkey, loved this episode. I’m inclined to believe there’s little hyperbole. (Does that make me like Marc’s dad? Well, I’d rather be acceptic than a sceptic.) Stephen’s Birthday Party is an odd little home movie, again many great stories, although the guests gathering to kneel at his feet at take succor from his storytelling is rather odd. Can’t blame them, though!
The near-death experience on Birthday is one with a shark… or not. Glad you’re still alive, Stephen!

David February 10, 2011 at 12:48 am

There are two podcasts that gave helped me through some difficult times in the past few years - WTF and the Tobolowsky Files. Nice to these worlds converge. Funny how I-Tunes has his name spelled wrong (with an “i” not a “y”) on this ep, since Stephen makes a point of carefully spelling it out carefully at the end of every one of his shows.

Crate&Trauma February 10, 2011 at 7:44 am

Who knew Needlenose Ned was so damned interesting!  Both you guys are great storytellers.

McCormick February 10, 2011 at 10:45 pm

Holy shit was that a great interview! I’ve always liked Steven’s work, but never really knew much about him. Played with Stevie Ray Vaughn?!? That alone is cool as fuck! The rest of it was just icing.
Nice job Marc.

tina p. February 11, 2011 at 12:40 am

Phenomenal interview.  Tobolowsky has led such a facinating life and has the amazing ability to communicate his stories.  It did cross my mind that he mught be a pathological liar.wink

opinionated introvert February 12, 2011 at 5:17 pm

I was laughing, mildly offended, humbled, saddened and yeah, more than a little skeptical. To hell with it…I love that this guy I know from here and there and always enjoyed, but didn’t really know, turns out to be way more captivating than a lot of the stars who overshadow him in Hollywood. Looking forward to checking out Tobolowsky’s podcast too!

Dan Sauter February 13, 2011 at 4:34 am

Great interview and talk about some great stories - More like this please! Keep spreading out and continue to interview interesting people outside of the comedy world.

Katie February 14, 2011 at 2:57 am

Stephen Tobolowsky was delightful and charming, and this interview was delightful and charming. Really hope to see more interviews like this with folks not necessarily involved in comedy. It seems to lead to Marc drawing out surprising, engaging stories and conversation with the guests. Thanks.
