Ugh, I can’t stand TAL or Ira Glass. The ambiguously gay male radio host (NPR would hyphenate that adjective) style that Ira has spawned is now the default method for ALL NPR programming. What’s next after the TAL TV show, a movie entitled “Being Ira Glass?”

Marc Maron and WTFPod are the future. Ira and TAL (PRI not NPR) are the past. And, I much rather listen to the copycats that spin off from Maron than precious NPR posers.

Great podcast.  The mix of speaking and interviewing styles created this cool, tense, emotional dissonance in the room.  I love This American Life, and Marc’s is my favorite podcast.

I’m not sure what was more surprising to me—that Marc was correct in assuming he and Ira would, indeed, have a great deal in common, or that Ira was as much of a WTF fan as it turns out he clearly is. My jaw kinda dropped when he started describing the Mancia two-parter.

Like many people, Ira praised Marc for his second Menstealia show. He said that Meanstealia “unspooled” mentally. Yeah.

I don’t know. Maybe my finger isn’t as on the pulse of what qualifies as a good or a bad interview, even though I majored in psychology and one of my two minors is in journalism.
Like some people, I thought that the antipathy and snarkiness that was directed (unfairly) at Dane Cook should have been directed at Meanstealia during the second interview.
Instead Marc had a lot of Swiss neutrality (haha), and at its conclusion Meanstealia’s Berlin Wall of Bullshit and his defense mechanisms were more fortified than ever.

I defy someone to listen to that show then tell me that Meanstealia is honestly re-evaluating himself. I’m sorry, but it was far from “excellent reporting.” It was all bullshit… and it was bad for ya.

That was great! I love TAL.

Ira was exceedingly humble and realistic about himself. He was surprisingly, “I mean, like,” inarticulate at times. And was it me or did he oddly say things 3 times in a row a few times? (“I think, I think, I think…”)

The attempts to pigeon-hole Ira and link the 2 of you were a bit forced. Seemed you weren’t listening to what he was saying because you had a narrative to roll out about who he is and how he became that person. (“The magic of radio!”)

It would have been interesting to delve more into the need for TAL to wrap each story in a poignant bow and how that relates to him vs your show/person. The Gershwin approach is touching but can be twee and trying sometimes vs a more punk approach.

Overall, very enjoyable. Great choice!

Hey, Brendan, why are you not on anymore? Those early bits you were on were great. Didn’t you guys do movie reviews one time or am I recalling someone else?

No idea who the guy was but good interview anyway - Marc again demonstrating his skill of putting people at ease so they open up.  AND that Premium podcast No.4 is hilarious man. All the guests are funny but Dave Attell is in another league. Just wished it was a longer show . . . Love the live WTF’s!

The music in the episode is 1) the score to the film Amelie and 2) “Perpetuum Mobile” by Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Both songs are heavily used on This American Life.

I was on the episodes when Marc was in New York. That’s where I live. But in addition to the geographical reasons, the show has evolved beyond the short chat segments. I’m not sure they would fit anymore.

Marc, Ive considered you the working man’s Ira Glass for a long time and if not that, at least the Straight man’s Terry Gross.  Incidentally, Regarding that Mencia episode, the second part; As an addict in recovery, and Marc can back me up on this, I have seen in meetings a LOT of guys talk and talk big but who are obviously not ready to own up to ANYTHING! And Carlos reminded me of any one of those guys who ive listened to go on and on in an AA meeting, blaming everyone else but themselves and then disappear after a couple weeks. The guy was a bullshitter from the beginning and tried to out bullshit himself, but couldn’t beat, as William Burroughs said; “The mark inside” (no pun intended)

On Ira’s comments on the episode at the TAL website, he said 1) Louis cried during their interview, 2) Mencia admitted he stole jokes and 3) Jay Leno was kind of a dick during his interview with Judd Apatow.  Are any of those actually true?

Regarding the talk about the storytelling process, it seems like Ira would either select a story that fits the mold of an ideal story or edit to the point that a story turns into his ideal of what a story should be. I wonder if there’s a line in the editing process to preserve the raw story while also making it entertaining or appealing.

Hi Marc, thanks for the Podcast. I must say, a lot of people I recommend WTF to will often remark “oh I listen to This American Life”. So this was a perfect way for me to dip my toe into Ira.. yawn fest. Really good interview skills as usual Marc but lsitening to Ira was like pulling teeth to me.. so glad I found WTF. Every week I am exposed to new amazing comedians through it - thanks man.

Small world…I have been a huge Ira fan and blog pointed me to WTF…and now I can’t stop listening. 

Although both TAL and WTF have their similarities and differences, the same is true of both.  They keep you interested and wanting more.  Your show is great, thank you for putting it all out there for us! 

Oh, and I found it totally amazing that you could get Ira to say F*&# within the first part of the show.  Mission accomplished as my jaw hit the ground…and I learned that Ira is just like all of us WTFers.
