Greetings to the damned-

We made it through another Rapture. I think this was my third and it was certainly the most disappointing. I wasn’t expecting much. I wasn’t expecting anything actually. I knew it wasn’t going to happen. There were no fireworks in my hood. If anything big is going to happen here, there are fireworks leading up to it for weeks sometimes. Fourth of July officially starts June 12th, here in the hills of the barrio. Looking forward to it—all three weeks of it. Maybe the Rapture did happen and there were only a few people worthy of being picked up by the Jesus ship. The sad thing about that is if this is Hell on Earth not much has changed since last week and I’m pretty comfortable.

The day the Rapture was supposed to go down my buddy Dave sent me Nonzero by Robert Wright. I have no idea what it is about but he can’t shut up about it and we like to talk. It looks like it’s one of those books that explains everything. I have no idea what to expect out of the first 17 pages, which is probably all I will read. I am also pages away from finishing the Keith Richards book. He is talking about food a lot. I am savoring it. I don’t want it to end, and it is one of the rare things in life that doesn’t have to as long as I don’t read it.

There is a big Live WTF at The Steve Allen Theater tomorrow, May 24, 8PM. I have a great line up! Joel McHale, BJ Novak, Dwayne Perkins, Allan Havey, Eddie Pepitone and Jim Earl. I don’t know if is sold out but the link is here. It will be fun and I will bring some of the new Cat Negotiations shirts.

Big shows this week. Garry Shandling came by and we had a sweet talk about stuff. Good guy and funny as hell. I have a lot of respect for him. Live from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is going up on Thursday, so quit asking me about. It was a blast. I hope you dig it.

Le Mariage de la Vierge

Cette uvre est le pendant de L’Adoration des bergers. Elle provient vraisemblablement d’une srie de dix-sept Scnes de la vie de la Vierge inventories au XVIIIe sicle dans la chambre de la reine, au palais royal de Madrid, dont d’autres lments sont conservs dans divers muses et collections espagnoles.

Une composition classique

Au milieu, la Vierge est reprsente debout en robe rose et manteau bleu clair, tte nue, les cheveux chtains retombant autour du cou. Devant elle, un personnage, genou gauche terre, lui prsente un vase. A gauche, en manteau verdtre, le grand prtre lit dans un grand livre que soutient un jeune enfant tandis que saint Joseph, vtu d’une robe violette et d’un manteau jaune, tient la branche fleurie. Plus loin, des lvites portent des flambeaux ;  droite, des jeunes filles agenouilles. La scne se passe sous une arcade de temple avec des ttes d’anges ails dans les airs.

L’attitude de la Vierge voque celle de la Sainte Suzanne (Rome, glise Sainte-Marie-de-Lorette) de Franois Duquesnoy (1597-1643) dont elle s’inspire maints gards. L’quilibre des formes, la gamme de couleurs froides et le format en largeur voque le classicisme de Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), et plus particulirement sa premire srie des Sept sacrements (Belvoir Castle, collection du duc de Rutland).

Une carrire brillante

Peintre prcoce, Luca Giordano travailla Naples dans l’atelier de son pre Antonio puis dans celui de Ribera. Son aisance et sa rapidit dans l’exercice de la peinture lui valut le surnom de Luca Fa Presto . Il se rendit Rome o il fut profondment marqu par l’art de Pierre de Cortone.

Aimable pasticheur, Giordano excutait avec la mme facilit un tableau dans le style de n’importe quel peintre et grava l’eau forte quelques estampes qui montrent ses qualits de dessinateur. Lors de ses voyages successifs dans les divers foyers artistiques de l’Italie, il copia les grands matres Rome, Florence, Milan et Venise, puis retourna Naples avant de se mettre au service du grand duc Cosme III Florence en 1667. Passant celui du roi d’Espagne Charles II en 1692, il peignit fresque le plafond de la chapelle et l’escalier de l’Escurial, avant de participer la dcoration du grand salon du Buen Retiro et de la vote de la chapelle royale Madrid. A la mort du roi, Giordano accompagna Naples le nouveau souverain et peignit la sacristie de la Chartreuse Saint Martin (1704), chef d’uvre baroque de peinture claire.
