Episode 67 - Robin Williams

WTF Robin Williams

Yeah, Marc’s sitting down with Robin Williams for an hour. No big deal. So what do you talk about with an international comedy superstar? How about alcoholism, cocaine, divorce, joke stealing, heart surgery, fame, Richard Pryor, jealousy, and Twitter? Yeah. That should do it.

Beyond great, all downhill from here unless you get in your time machine & get an interview with Richard Pryor or Lenny Bruce ha ha. Love the show, all the interviews are great no matter who you get these days.

Joakim April 26, 2010 at 1:57 am

That was beautiful. Robin made you into a nice guy smile ha. Robin is really fast in his synapsis there in no way he could have prepered this.
Again, beautiful, a wounderful start on a monday morning.

Hello from a Malaysian fan.

Awesome podcast, or awesomest podcast? Sorry for the lameness in that last sentence.

So much fascinating stuff packed into 1 episode. Best 1-hour of office work distraction ever!

DickM April 26, 2010 at 8:12 am

Awesome !!

Ever since Sedition I have been convinced that Marc is one of the best interviewers going - way underappreciated. This interview locks it in - he was able to do an interview with Robin Williams, was able to go with his stream of consciousness but kept the interview in the real-world in a way you almost never hear with Robin and all the lame interviewers who get the BIG BUCKS out there. It was just wonderful!

This interview goes to the top of Marc\‘s CV grin

Well done Marc and Robin.

Haven\‘t heard the Robin Williams post yet (I time it with work), but am loving the artwork right now. How long does Nathan Smith take to make these?

I\‘ve enjoyed every episdoe of the podcast. Thought I was supercool getting the scoop on the alternative comics. Who would have thought that the Robin Williams interview would rank amongst the best.
Well Done.

andrew h April 26, 2010 at 7:38 pm

You are the Bob Costas of podcasting. (try saying that 10 times fast). Actual real discussions with \“famous\”, no bullshit. Amazing, I wish it could have gone on for 5 hours.

Sobreiro April 26, 2010 at 8:30 pm

This word is overused on the Internet, but this episode of WTF is, actually, quite epic.

Sunshine Jim April 27, 2010 at 1:47 am

Bravo!

you were right, it\‘s a classic.

one of the funniest, most honest and interesting conversations about humor i\‘ve ever heard.

i want to thank you both for sharing that.

Joe Tily April 27, 2010 at 2:29 am

Robin Williams. The Fisher King. A landmark podcast.

You do a great interview Maron. Full of insight, soul and laughs.

\“Hey Bobby - you still like black pussy?\”
Seriously, i almost strained my gut laughing!

A Drunk April 27, 2010 at 3:29 am

Hi Marc,

God I wish I was Robbin Williams. I don\‘t mean his money, I wish I was sober like him and Marc.

What a amazing show.

Truly \“therapy\” for us all, such a gentle man! Such a wonder. I never, ever heard a comedian cop to stealing AND PAYING for stolen jokes; GOD BLESS HIM! This world is a better place because Marc Maron exposed this fallen angel.

I love you Marc. I love you Robin. Maybe I can get sober someday like you! for now I\‘m a drunk.

A Drunk.

Derek Thompson April 27, 2010 at 6:40 pm

brilliant. Thank You!

brandon April 27, 2010 at 9:45 pm

\“hey, mister Di niro! Do you still like black pussy\”?

when I heard that, man I tell you I was on the floor couldn\‘t take a breath. A straight up gut laugh, it\‘s been awhile. thanks… truly great.

Joe Haveson April 28, 2010 at 1:06 am

Marc…you have always been a great interviewer…but you out-did yourself here… No one has ever gotten so much sincerity out of Robin Williams before. I like him more than ever now!
I\‘ve been with you since the very first AAR stuff…amazingly, you do get even more humble, and more concise ( and funnier ) - but I\‘m still mad at the way Sam S. could not GET you, or just let you BE, on BRR!

Good work, man!
p.s. Good on you Brendan (and great work)...for staying with the Snark!!

Bloppo April 28, 2010 at 1:39 am

You better interview Jonathan Winters next!

DickM April 28, 2010 at 7:37 am

Last night I listened to the interview again while watching TV wit wifey (using earphones).

When Williams tells the old joke (which I\\\‘ve never heard) about the doctor telling the guy \\\“You gotta stop masturbating.. Why? Because I\\\‘m trying to examine you.\\\” I could not stop laughing ... she kicked me out. So I was walking the dogs down a dark lane laughing at that joke for several minutes like the idiot I am. That might be the funniest joke I\\\‘ve ever heard.

Great interview !!

milly mandy April 28, 2010 at 6:05 pm

WOW that was great . no manic riffing just sincere conversation .

Chad April 28, 2010 at 7:42 pm

Powwwww! A koala bear just crapped rainbows on my brain. Holy crap, this is the best thing on the Internet.

Like someone else said, time to quit WTFpod, I don\‘t see how this episode can be topped. Go out on the high note. (Not a pun.)

Tim Johnson April 28, 2010 at 11:37 pm

I agree with Chad,

Let\‘s all commit mass suicide, WTF?

Love,

Tim

Where is the Thursday Podcast?!?! I NEED MORE MARON!

Dan Sauter April 29, 2010 at 10:02 am

Screw that mess, Marc is just getting started! I\‘m sticking around on Plant E just to see what\‘s next. Love the show and am eagerly awaiting the first post with the pink hardhat.

Brendan April 29, 2010 at 10:15 am

Hey everyone,

We\‘re pushing \“Episode 68 - Steven Pearl\” to tomorrow. There are a lot of new WTFers downloading the show this week and we want to give this Robin episode a little room to breathe.

New episode will be up about 13 hours from now.

CJ April 29, 2010 at 11:37 am

Holy crap that was an awesome ep! Way to go Marc for landing that interview!

Murtagh April 29, 2010 at 4:02 pm

The Robin Williams interview is PROOF that Marc \\\“inside the actors studio\\\” where he interviews comics and others even. But they must understand that Marc will ask HARD questions. NO SAFETY NET.
I can see it in my minds eye, Marc doing it on TV. I can see the set, the couches and even some of the BITS. \\\“One Hour: w/Marc Maron\\\”.
And Brendon would be Exec Producer! smile
And I\\\‘d get a nod for the name. \\\”)

Bob April 29, 2010 at 6:25 pm

That was terrific, Mark. Great job!

Bob April 29, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Shit! I meant Marc, not Mark! Sorry!

Lawrence Schemelia April 30, 2010 at 1:07 am

Marc, I concur with the general consensus here that you are one of the most egregiously underrated interviewers out there today. Your comedic gifts and soul-searching insight lend themselves incomparably well to this format. And the fact that Robin Williams was allowed to be both funny AND focused is as much a testament to you as him. Incredible show with two phenomenal talents…..Now, let\\\‘s see if you can get Dane Cook to admit to stealing from Louis C.K. If anyone can, it\\\‘s YOU, Sir! TERRIFIC program as always, Marc!

RoadLord May 06, 2010 at 8:41 pm

Again, walking around the neighborhood, laughing like a loon to this funny, interesting, honest interview. Robin Williams like you\‘ve never quite heard him before. And always a pleasure to get inside the \“business\” from the perspective of the real human beings who live it. Quite a gem, I must say.

Steven May 15, 2010 at 5:14 pm

Robin\‘s retelling of the Richard Pryor\‘s bit about God coming to pick up his son was everything I love about comedy. It was hilarious, deep, and had a dark edge. I didn\‘t think that moment would be topped…then Robin goes into that genius suicide monologue with his subconscious which absolutely blew me away! That was one of the heaviest, darkest, funniest pieces of comedy that I have ever heard.

I was a Robin Williams fan early on and then sorta dismissed him when he became a \“real actor\”. After hearing this he\‘s back on my A-list.

Excellent job, Marc!

kate July 31, 2010 at 7:26 pm

Just great!!! Wonderfully open to both of you. Fan anyway, but think it is beyond that.

Chris September 27, 2010 at 8:38 pm

That interview was beautiful and sad, made decide to go to the gym even though I was planning to skip it.

Jennie Marie November 04, 2010 at 4:35 pm

I’ve never heard Williams sound so calm, serene and centered. He’s usually “ON” during interviews. Here, he’s just himself. I think it’s the tone that Marc sets. Great work.

OGRastamon March 30, 2011 at 4:23 pm

My subscription has just been repaid in full. Listening to any more episodes will be piracy. Just the way I like it.

even if it is very much his humour style. It has never been one of to sit to look and not to take the opportunity for a laughter, even if one of that little internal reactions of amusing…. but a little ‘over the lines. There is an old man said regard that is a very thin line between love and hate…. I do not manage even to look at Robin Williams, also when it is having a serious meeting without laughing. And ‘the courage of saying things that others only to amuse like a thought that passes suhagra online.
