Thanx for Billy Connolly Marc .. What a guy !

I have occasionally lobbied you that you must get Connolly on and I am SO glad that you finally did.  And your introductory comments nailed the importance of Billy and what a wonderful guy he is (my wife and I met him once in Ballater Scotland - where he lives when not in NY - and he was a very nice guy)..

Good on ya Marc..

RE: The Patent Trolls

You mentioned the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) - are they involved with the podcast case yet? Seems like the kind of case they’re likely to jump on…

Hey Marc and Adam, here’s a site with links to thousands of articles on patent trolls:

http://www.ipfrontline.com/zoomaspx/search.aspx?zoom_query=troll&zoom_page=4&zoom_per_page=10&zoom_and=0&zoom_sort=0&zoom_xml=0

Also the Government’s site: http://USPTO.gov/patentlitigation

I was just thinking about yesterdays show with Allan Stephan and what a fight he’d put up if these bottom dwellers fucked with him.

Best of luck guys!!

How the fuck can you “patent” podcasting? People have downloaded audio files from the internet since the beginning of the internet. And if anybody, shouldn’t this fucker go after Apple? Isn’t it called “podcasting” because of the iPod? From what I’ve gathered, it seems like this guy wants money for just the idea of distributing podcasts. And again, who distributes more than Apple with iTunes? Anyway, I guess its just ignorant judges that are being conned with jargon. This shit will go away. And now… back to this .mp3 recording of a radio program.

Carolla and Maron is like some kind of meeting at Malta. Throw in Connolly and it’s one for the ages.

Joe- the issue is much different (and more complicated) than you suggest. (In brief the patent office issued patents 25 years ago in their confusion and now a few individuals are taking advantage of loose wording and strong-arming corporations and some little guys). Some judges HAVE thrown cases out but not everybody has the quarter million to 2 million dollars it takes to hire an attorney to take it to the point where it gets thrown out! These NPEs go after all internet services; sales, broadcasting, etc.

I’ve looked at Google’s solution and some of the cases and I’m still convinced time is best spent petitioning congressmen. The patent office has to uphold issuance until a higher power rules otherwise. The companies that have already done the payoff (like Amazon, B & N) wouldn’t chip in for lobbyists but there are hundreds more in line.

btw, POTUS has already urged congress that he will sign legislation that changes internet patent trolling. Clare McCaskill’s bill takes a step, but it’s complicated in it’s effect (putting the burden on state attorneys, for example) and I think it stalled in the senate so far. The trolls can see the end coming and that means they’re pressing harder while they can.////////////////mr boyfriend - LMGTFY

Nice informal chat with a legend.  I remember in the early days of WTF thinking-up my dream guests for Marc to interview . . . . . Billy was way up there on my list. It sounded like he enjoyed being on the show.  Really enjoyable episode, thanks Marc!

Ever since you told the story way back about you having breakfast with Billy Connolly and seeing sad Steve Martin eating breakfast alone, I have wished for both Steve Martin and Billy Connolly to guest on the show. Now, one of my wishes have come true and it fulfilled my expectations and more. I loved every minute of the interview and I could have continued listening to the both of you talked for hours.

Now, all that is left is Steve Martin. I’ll be wishing very hard for him to appear on the show grin

What the fuck? What happened to the download mp3 button? I can’t be fucked going thro that bullshit itunes application to get it. I appreciate all the hard work and I know it’s free, but if I can’t download directly to computer anymore I won’t be listening.

Quite frankly, it’s disturbing to think a group of failures could take credit (Vaguely at best) and/or claim the rights to Podcasting. What’s more disturbing is that this issue is even a conversation. Any court judge (Or, group of dragging senators) with sense could clearly see this is not only abusive, but also clearly illegal (As in Mafia shakedown).

Someone should seriously challenge the Personal Audio patent, as it does not support the definition of modern Podcasting. I would strongly suggest Carolla COUNTER SUE the scumbags, ‘to the tune of $100 million’, on the grounds of frivolous litigation and unethical use of patent.

Once Carolla wins the counter suit, Personal Audio will have to pay restitution to all of the victims of their scam to repay the fund.

I personally have an intense dislike for the monarchy, but clearly, it means something to Billy Connolly. Maron gave him a pretty hard time about it.

How about instead of just saying how much you respect him, treating him with some actual respect?

OMG!!  He shifted the paradigm for me!  loved it!

The first time I saw Billy Connolly was in 1976.  He opened for Elton John at the Capitol Center near Washington DC.  He was hilarious!  Dressed as a banana, singing about his “willy”.  The only way I was allowed to go to the concert, was if my Dad came, and my best friend at the time, Kathy.  I was almost 13.  I loved him!  My Dad was horrified and said he was just “awful”.  My dad brought earplugs, fig newtons, and picked his teeth.  Elton John was terrific.  We ran into a few of my other school friends and they never let me forget how uptight my dad was.  Thank you, Billy.  I’ve always loved you.  And thank you, Marc, for having him on.
