Episode 406 - Mike Eagle

Alternative hip-hop artist Mike Eagle is in the garage to give Marc a little education about rap music, then and now. Mike talks about listening to ‘90s indie rock while all the other kids were listening to hip-hop and how it shaped his musical sensibility, and he tells Marc how his development as a rapper was a lot like the process of comedians at the UCB. great to see maron hold his own in relation to something he knows little about. marc and mike have a good chemistry. I hope they can explore it a little more someday.

I really liked this episode. First, thanks for introducing me to a new artist that I think I’ll really like. When Mike was naming his favorite bands/influences, I thought he was reading from my diary. Secondly, thanks for not being afraid to talk about race and about stereotypes. As much as we don’t want to, as a nation we really need to start having open, respectful dialogue about this no matter how uncomfortable it makes us. Because not talking about it, or worse, declaring it doesn’t exist anymore (thanks Supreme Court) are getting us nowhere. Third, you guys did a decent rap/hip hop genealogy but you DEFINITELY left something out. How you could have a discussion about alternative hip hop without mentioning PHARCYDE borders on blasphemy. They were at the forefront if not the godfathers of alt hop (I just made that term up, is it weird?). Just thought they should at least get a mention.

I heard on the Rogan show that you’re taking some heat for the comments about Zimmerman/Martin.

I’m white, and the cops/pigs stalk me quite regularly when I walk around at night. Ironically, it’s also the time when I most want to be LEFT THE FUCK ALONE. Granted, I walk at odd hours sometimes (after 10 PM and 5 AM) but it doesn’t give the right for them to regard me as a hardened criminal. They piss me the fuck off, and they get out of their cars to ask me very insulting questions: “Are you on parole or on probation?” They also make demands that violate my Constitutional rights: “Show me your id.” I never show my i.d. to a pig-fuck who hasn’t even made an accusation about a crime to me.
If I were black I would believe 100% that they were racist. But as it is, I know that they’re just morons. Also, as it is, I’ve had so many of these horrible experiences with them (that sometimes involve surrounding me as if I’m the fucking Hulk) that I understand why someone such as Trayvon would go off on a moron who isn’t even authorized to harass him legally as pigs do in America LEGALLY and in some cases illegally—but who has the cash for a lawsuit that you won’t even break even on?

Zimmerman is Hispanic.

J July 16, 2013 at 11:27 am

better link.

Chad July 16, 2013 at 11:35 am

@ J. So what? Hispanic is a broad term to designate ethnicity not race. There are black hispanics, white hispanics and just about every other mixture in between. How Zimmerman identifies himself has nothing with him being woefully inept, in training and demeanor, for his self appointed role as community guardian.

smitty July 17, 2013 at 5:13 am

@ J-  what the hell is a Hispanic, genius?  it’s just an overly broad, and overly specific at one and the same time, vaguely geographic demographic marker. it’s meaningless.  Zimm, was just conveniently anglo-enough,for the purposes of those that needed to demonize this poor kid[treyvon]. if Zimm had been an undocumented,non-politcally connected migrant worker[daddy judge anyone?]; he conversely, would have been latino enough to be convicted. so,it’s about context: social, situational, class, skin color, phenotype etc etc ad nauseam . don’t get caught in this twisted bullshit, of trying to determine what the hell a person is by looking at them. that’s for specious conniving ,agenda driven, politically disingenuous lying assholes.

Whoa, this was a surprise. Bridging the gap between Nocando’s podcast and Maron’s. Love it when two separate interests come together like this.

smitty July 21, 2013 at 11:27 pm

yo marc… AMERICORPs… has been around[‘94] for years, dude…  where have you been?

Rob W. July 23, 2013 at 10:45 pm

I liked when Marc said he likes Kanye. Now THAT would be a great interview! Is there any way that would ever happen?
