Episode 402 - David Sedaris

David Sedaris has been in the memoir writing game for a bit longer than Marc, so he comes bearing notes and advice regarding Marc’s latest book. They also discuss the differences between how they perform for crowds, why they both have fears of everyday things, and how they deal with family members in their memoir writing. This episode is sponsored by Shout! Factory presenting the new collection Richard Pryor: No Pryor Restraint. We’re also sponsored by LegalZoom and Warby Parker.

Great interview. I love Sedaris. I think you should get David and Amy on together. Yes, do that.

Thanks for this interview.  Enjoyed it as I always do.  I loved that he was reading excerpts from your book.

My experience at a reading was just as David described.  I went to one in my hometown and arrived two hours before the “show” because I heard we might be able to get a book signed ahead of time (there was no announced signing schedule).  I normally do not want to meet anyone I admire because I don’t want a lousy experience getting in the way, but the signed book was for a birthday present so I sucked it up.

David came out a few minutes after we arrived to sign books for anybody who was hanging around, which at the time was about 6 people.  He engaged us in conversation instead of the other way around and couldn’t have been more gracious.

Paul Dinello would be cool too.

This was the only way this interview could have ended, I felt like the two of you would still be in a conversation right now if it wasn’t the case. This oddly made me want a new episode of the Marc and Tom Show.

don’t run from the explosive bowel moment; it’s a special first thing.

Hi Marc,

Your show is one of the best things on tv.  You’re subtly doing stuff no one else is doing. My 2 cents:  keep experimenting, keep pushing. I loved the “books in common we haven’t read” line. Little one-off lines like that are great. Bite-sized wit that adds another layer to the show.

It seems you aren’t familiar with DS’s stories about his time as a performance artist.  Probably his funniest stuff. I can’t remember if it’s from “Me talk Pretty…” or something else.  It might be “twelve moments in the life of an artist.” Well, he read it somewhere and it is long.  Maybe just ask him, but find it and listen. Fucking hilarious.

More unasked for advice: Let interesting people talk. I think I heard you mention once that you working on this, so probably not necessary to mention. But it would have worked well with Cheech and Chong and Iggy. They are both pretty brilliant. And Cheech is a music encyclopedia. Check out his “what’s in my bag” interview at amoeba on youtube. Great series if you haven’t checked it out.  You could find new guests and new music there. Probably a great hotel time waster - other than the obvious hotel time waster…

Well, thanks for everything your doing and congrats on your well-earned success.
