Episode 390 - Pamela Adlon

Actress Pamela Adlon is known to many as a prepubescent boy - Bobby from “King of the Hill” - but actually spends most of her time as a concerned mom who is worried about losing her grip. Pam talks to Marc about the perils of raising teenagers, as well as the grind of being a working actor, the salvation of voice-acting and her collaborations with Louis CK. Holy crap I can’t tell you how much I love Pamela Adlon. I’m halfway through it and I’m begging her to come back to Louie, she was (is) brilliant. This interview opened my eyes to the horror of modern teens. I’m so glad my teenage years were just before the internet, let alone smartphones.

That ‘put a baby in me’ remark is horrifying. That phrase (to my paranoid mind) sounds like someone that wants to lock me into an alimony situation. Considering your relationship is a few years into it and not a few weeks, then that remark is more familiarity than crazy.

Pete_G May 20, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Love her! Love her! Love her!

Other Chris May 20, 2013 at 1:31 pm

I don’t know you! That’s my purse!

Jerry W May 20, 2013 at 1:47 pm

A house, ring and a baby on a deadline or the threat of a breakup?

I’ve been married 28 years to the right person. No arguing, no drama.
Hopefully Jessica is the right person for you.

All the best.

Neil May 20, 2013 at 2:19 pm

Hey Marc, that was fucking great! One of my new favorites episodes, she’s hilarious. Also, loved the 3rd ep of ‘Maron’, had to watch it twice.

Michael May 20, 2013 at 2:41 pm

I once heard another comedian say that his wife gave him a similar ultimatum. It was during the Annual End of the World Tour by Christopher Titus. Hope you and your spouse have better luck with each other then they did.

Brian May 20, 2013 at 3:49 pm

Yep, this has been one of my favorite episodes in a while and that is high praise, cause they’re all damned good. She’s the hottest and funniest. BTW I’m a full-time single dad of three myself, and can totally relate (though I only have one daughter and two boys)...just gonna throw that out there, Pam.

Jayme May 20, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Great job Marc! What a woman. Incredible role model for women entering the world of acting and entertainment.

Dan May 20, 2013 at 3:55 pm

The little Maron hasn’t even been conceived yet and already one of the (possibly future) parents is using emotion blackmail and dragging the kid into it. Wow…

Do the right thing Marc!

Scott Jones May 20, 2013 at 4:00 pm

I gotta agree, if you have to be given a deadline to give her a ring and a baby, maybe the relationship isn’t that strong, and you shouldn’t do it.  When two people are deeply in love with one another, they’re both usually of the mindset “Yes, I wanna marry you, be with you, share my life with you, and have a family with you!”  It does seem like she sees that you’re dragging your feet a bit, and as such, if your mind and heart aren’t completely into it, then yada yada yada.

Fantastic Episode Marc, you sounded like old friends by the end!

Marry Jessica before Pamela gets in there first!

Tad Daniels May 20, 2013 at 6:21 pm

Yeah, you should marry Pamela instead of Jessica.

Emotional blackmail is the last thing you deserve at this point.

Sharon May 20, 2013 at 7:02 pm

What a great interview—I absolutely loved Pamela! She has such a great voice and great energy. She seems like a great role model for moms, and I guess anyone who can relate.
I have two daughters and, although dad is around, he is MIA a lot of the time, so I can relate to what she’s talking about with her girls (but she has 3-good god!) Mine are both still under 10, so I’m not quite there, but it is all very frightening. .
Thanks for the great podcast!

Brian May 20, 2013 at 9:28 pm

First, i never comment on anything; however, i feel compelled in this instance. easily. in my top ten episodes. Pamela’s honesty and vulnerability, like yourself, is truly refreshing. much props being a single working mother of three. love to hear another interview with her!

Ryan May 21, 2013 at 12:10 am

I think y’all should give Jessica the benefit of the doubt… if she was just making it clear to Marc that a kid is something very important to her then she is just being honest and communicative, not blackmailing Marc.

I absolutely loved this episode. King of the Hill is one of my favorite shows, and Pamela is a highlight on Louie & Californication. After hearing this talk I just want to be friends with her because she seems like an awesome person to hang out with.

did i mishear marc or did he say that if he doesn’t knock his girlfriend up then she is going to leave him. Either I misheard him or I am a lot more oblivious to the intricacies of adult like than I thought I was.

i see a good amount or at least a certain amount, of young guys that are bewildered by the availability of internet access porn and sexting. let’s not assume that it’s all positive for boys, and all negative for girls. for some of boys not ready for sex,it’s deep anxiety and stress around sexualizing,so there is a “bullying” that goes on there too;not necessarilly by individual girls[and guys] so much, though that happens, too;as by the the circumstances of their world, that is so heavily augmented by the current cyber-reality.

marc, at times is a great one,for presenting a truncated one side reality, of shit going on in the world.

Benjamin May 22, 2013 at 9:45 pm

“Put a baby in me.”

That seriously freaked me out just hearing that weird phrase and combined with the threat of leaving.. that’s a fucked up ultimatum. Obviously there are risks when you’re trying to have kids past your twenties but that whole thing sounds weird and unsettling to me. Put a baby in me? How unemotional and joyless does that sound?
And don’t we have more than enough people on this planet already anyway? People are fucking starving to death, the planet is overpopulated, people are jaded, overworked, unfulfilled, miserable, sad, depressed.. society is fucked up. Fundamentalist crazies, gun nuts, whores, too much technology causing overstimulations, bankers and lobbyists running around fucking mankind up its ass. The answer? More people?? How about less and better educated people. Scratch that. Let’s keep this Capitalism machine going and burn through the planet’s resources.

That just got weird. I’m sorry.

Pamela Adlon is awesome btw

TheKids May 22, 2013 at 11:06 pm

Benjamin, I completely agree with you. I have a kid and I feel like a piece of shit for bringing a life in the world we live today.

Gaia May 23, 2013 at 1:33 am

You two were fantastic together! You’ve got to have her back to be like a co-host at a live gig or something. Also thank you so much for saying the word “conceit”–I’ve been trying to think of that word forever.

Joe Tily May 23, 2013 at 11:31 am

One of the best WTF’s ever. Thanks Marc!

smitty May 23, 2013 at 12:55 pm

oh god pamela- love ya, but you are so wrong! a lot of men your age, want to be with women your age. you are adoreable!!  many of us, don’t relate to, or want to be bothered by the generational differences re younger women. plus, today you’ll see men in their 40’s and younger, with women in their 60’s.  wake up,it’s not 19….??....

Malik H. May 26, 2013 at 6:12 pm

Oh my God!  This was incredibly fucking hilarious!  Pamela Adlon is phenomenal!  This must be added to the ever growing list of greatest wtf podcasts.  How great would it be to have her as a mom or an aunt?  She is brilliantly funny, down-to-earth, witty, intelligent, and engaging.  Marc, I thought you were going to ask her on a date for a minute, you two would make a helluva couple.  Awesome show.

Jim June 12, 2013 at 6:35 pm

Emotional blackmail?!  Oh grow up people, sounds to me like she said it how it is, she wants a kid and if she can’t have one with Marc then she’ll have to move on.  Get this, women have a biological need/urge/drive.

Marta June 18, 2013 at 3:44 pm

I love Pamela Adlon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My dad’s dead too! Marc, you’re awesome, of course.  Also, despite everyone on here freaking out and being self righteous about procreation, you will be fine, and so will your impending family unit.  Congrats on the decision.

Emma August 15, 2013 at 6:52 pm

Thank you so much for this episode - a dream come true to hear an actual interview with one of my heroes! Pamela is a massive genius. Now, can you please get Stephen Root?

GM October 15, 2013 at 4:19 pm

Um, don’t you guys read Justin? You’re supposed to bash female guests so he can come on here and scold everyone. Oh, I guess maybe his thesis isn’t true.
