Episode 359 - Carl Reiner

With a little help from Mel Brooks, Marc is able to sit down for a chat with another legend of comedy, Carl Reiner. They talk about Carl’s journey from writing to acting to directing, as well as his collaborative relationships with Sid Ceasar, Dick Van Dyke, Steve Martin and, of course, Mel Brooks. Why isn’t this on itunes yet?

You’ve taken it to another level with these last two, Marc.  HIstorical.  Library of Congress.
Congrats and Shalom.

I’m so happy for you, Marc! The Mel Brooks interview was incredible in and of itself, but it seems that it has opened the door to some amazing opportunities. I can’t wait to hear your conversation with Dick Van Dyke. The podcast just gets better and better all the time!

Two great interviews, as always. I was on the number 3 train in NY heading uptown listening to the Carl Reiner interview.  I almost pissed myself when he dropped the “F” bomb describing Sid Ceasar’s acting prowess.  Really caught me by suprise.  Also the constant phone interruptions made me laugh…not sure why.  Keep up the good work.

Amazing couple of episodes, Marc. Such a joy. Thank-you.

Per February 07, 2013 at 3:34 pm

Haha, 80%. That was just great. Thank you so much, Marc!

Marc, this has been an amazing week for comedy. Thank you so much for letting us have a glimpse into the minds of two incredible forces of nature. I want to base my life around building friendships that are as strong and adorable as these two men.

Just hearing how amazed you were by hanging out with these guys made me feel good, and it reminded me of how good I felt after meeting comedy idols of mine and when they would let me in on an inside joke. Keep spreading those genuine feelings around, they do the collective unconscious a real solid.

Bummed to miss you in Boston this week but we’ll be even more excited to see you when you come around these parts again. Can’t wait to hear Rick Jenkins tell a few tales.

Marc is the Studs Terkel of our time.

Alright Maron you have already set high standards for 2013 so how are you going to top these two wonderful interviews you did with these legends.

Funny you mentioned George Shapiro sitting there because don’t you think he would make for a WTF podcast? Also, I think you should snag both Reiners and interview Rob about his fascinating career and life.

And you have to think that Albert Brooks is EVENTUALLY going to say yes. He has been mentioned so many times in past WTF podcasts and is as influential as anyone on the comedians of today that it would be fascinating to hear him discuss his life and career. I would imagine if Mel gets a 2-hour podcast, that Albert would need one as well.

Both these interviews were fantastic and meant a great deal to me.  My brother had a 2000 year old man album and I performed it for class in elementary school.  Really love your energy with these guys and in general with your show.  We met a coupla times performing at Luna Lounge many years ago.  Mazel tov and great work!!!

David Rosen February 07, 2013 at 11:37 pm

Both of these episodes were just amazing.

Joe Tily February 08, 2013 at 5:04 am

I found both these interviews quite touching . . . thanks very much Marc for all your good work.

Mona February 08, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Still not on iTunes?

Pete G February 09, 2013 at 11:13 am

Another fantastic episode… forced me to re-listen to 2K Year Old Man…
...with ‘I Remember Me’ queued up on Audible! Thanks Carl, for starting my weekend off right!

The last two interviews were amazing. I laughed harder than I have in a long time. And hearing the reverence in your voice, Marc, was incredibly touching. For anyone to be in the presence of these giants of comedy and entertainment would be daunting. But, to see these men through a comic’s eyes was edifying on a whole new level. Those were two works of art, sir. Thank you much.

I totally fucked up and just spent a bunch of money on flowers and forgot to use the code. I’m sorry, Marc, I love your show and I support it as much as I can. Hopefully I will at least get a little bit laid from this. I’ll keep you posted.

Pretty sad that one of the comments here complains about the presence of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner.

Ryan February 10, 2013 at 10:25 pm

Brooks + Reiner might be my two favorite WTF episodes. Their brilliant careers, the history, hearing about their WWII experiences, the 80% callback… damn I really enjoyed them.

And maybe it is because I have lost grandparents to alzheimers, but hearing those two still so sharp and such good friends after all these years pretty much made me tear up a bit, which isn’t the usual experience for me when listening to my comedy podcasts. Keep up the great work Marc.

’ I was on the number 3 train in NY heading uptown listening to the Carl Reiner interview.  I almost pissed myself when he dropped the “F” bomb describing Sid Ceasar’s acting prowess.  Really caught me by suprise.’

I was walking my dog through the countryside in the Midlands, UK, and had exactly the same experience.  Nice to know what a small world we live in nowadays.

Excellent work as usual Marc.

When is Seinfeld gonna show up?

kev February 19, 2013 at 6:06 am

holy fuck what a great couple of episodes. Especially loved Mr Reiner professing his love for Justified and Inglorious Basterds.

Michael February 22, 2013 at 3:07 pm

Hi Marc,
After hearing the Mel Brooks interview i could not wait for the Carl Reiner podcast.
When you mentioned the Rolls Royce i thought Mel Brooks was going to drive you there in it .
Also was that Mel that kept phoning Carl Reiner to see when the interview was over so he could talk to you, and finish the 80% Joke.
Thanks now waiting for the Podcast for my 3rd favourite comedian Dick Van Dyke
Great interviews, i keep in shape walking my dog and listening to your interviews sometimes i keep walking waiting for the end of the podcast.  Do you know how cold it is in Toronto and you make me stay out their for 120 minutes.

Thanks for the enjoyment.
