I don’t understand the amount of praise that’s been heaped on Bridesmaids. I thought it was O.K. It is so slow in the middle and end, and Wiig’s character gets so mopey. I wasn’t crazy about it. Paul seems like a good guy though.

Great episode.  The Freaks & Geeks DVD’s are my most prized and most watched. And I highly recommend Paul’s two books, Kick Me & Superstud.

While I generally enjoy these podcasts on this occasion I had to stop listening to after the Bridesmaids/artist discussion. While your guest feigned a magnanimous posture of understanding he quickly undercut this by snide criticisms of the winning film, “I see why we invented sound”, and an embarrassing whining along the lines of “I coulda done arty shots too you know” that struck me as embarrassing and cheap, I suggest you accept the defeat magnanimously or explain why you feel you should have won, your stance makes you seem petty, not to mention displaying a [perhaps deliberate] misunderstanding of why the other film has proven popular. While Marc’s “I haven’t seen the other one but here’s why yours should have won”  comes across as ingratiating and lazy.

Wow, BJG! Talk about a wildly nonsensical misinterpretation. Feig was genuinely magnanimous, never said he felt he should have won, and in fact said he never had any expectation of winning. He praised The Artist as a wonderful film, only saying there were a couple of MOMENTS that make you realize why sound was invented. That’s really not criticism. And he displayed no misunderstanding whatsoever about why it was popular. He was also not whining about arty shots; he just made the very valid point that they don’t work well in pure comedy.

HEAVYWEIGHTS is one of my favorite movies!  also loved the “Freebie and the Bean” reference.  hadn’t thought of that film in years.
thanks Paul and Marc

Hey BGB? Hopefully you’ve put your thesaurus down by now. What are you, the Executive Producer of “The Artist”? I didn’t realize Marc had to be Leonard Malton in his comparison of the two movies. I tell ya, some people need to find things to do…

Pete D January 28, 2012 at 11:01 pm

Ohh, it’s BJG. Eh, you’re still annoying.

Great interview! Love that Feig! If you love Freaks and Geeks you gotta read Kick Me and Superstud.

Feig mentions the rerelease of -Animal Crackers- as influential. I just read -Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House- by Steve Stoliar, the then student who led the campaign for its rerelease, and then spent 3 years working for Groucho. It’s Stoliar’s own memoir of the period, not a biography, but a good read for those interested in the biz.
I love when guests remember a really specific ‘this is it!’ moment, a turning point in their thinking about comedy/entertainment and their aspirations. wonder if listeners have them while listening to this very podcast…

Hey Pete D, hopefully you’ve put down your drink and studied the English language by now and realized “magnanimous” and “ingratiate” aren’t exactly obscure words requiring a thesaurus.

Great episode, hadn’t watched F&G before, good fun watching all those guys when young.
