Episode 221 - Carrot Top

The last time Marc spoke with a prop comic, it didn’t end well. But things are different this time when Marc heads to Casa de Carrot Top in Las Vegas. Carrot Top reveals the origins of his act, examines his feelings about the way he’s treated by other comics, and gets reflective about Bill Hicks and George Carlin. this would have been a a much better interview with out the lackey chiming in every 2 min. Its one thing to know where your bread is buttered…. but come on guy let Marc interview Scott!

Just listened October 24, 2011 at 7:47 am

That was a nice interview and CT sounds like a nice guy.  I’ve heard him on other interviews so I already knew this, but hopefully the comedy nerd crowd will take it easier on him after hearing that he’s so self-aware and self-deprecating.

The toadie/hype man/opening act probably should have stayed out of it. Its pretty irritating to listen to an interview when a third party keeps chiming in.  Future toadies: you’re going to come off bad and distract the audience if you interfere with an interview.

Scott October 24, 2011 at 8:08 am

Was the presence of the toady part of the deal for the interview?

How about this for a show idea?  A Ouija board, a medium, and Sam Kinison.

Zaq October 24, 2011 at 8:30 am

Good to know I’m not the only one annoyed with Carrot Top’s fluffer stroking his ego every 5 minutes.  Prop comic or not, he has had a successfull career and no one can argue that so it would have been nice to get a good deep conversation with him the way only Marc can do without the other guy there.

jimjim October 24, 2011 at 9:40 am

lol, WTF this interview was insane!  i loved towards the end when Charlie left to take a phone call and Marc had to quickly do an actual one on one interview with Carrot before Charlie got back.  It was suspenseful! , like “Hurry Marc!  Get something real out of Carrot before Charlie comes back! “.

Carrot Top came off pretty well.  It’s a shame he got shit on so much in the past by other comics.  It’s sad that comics felt so threatened they acted out like bullies.
Charlie came off like a mental patient!  Carrot would have been fine without him.  It would be nice to hear more about Carrot’s childhood, highschool wrestling days, and why/how he got into performing.

thanks Marc!, this interview was definitely fun and a lil bizarre.  a great listening experience!

jimjim October 24, 2011 at 9:44 am

to add to the bizarre factor, the “toadie” chiming in every second to re-interpret everything in Carrot’s favor , sounded exactly like Bill Hicks!
so weird

Meg October 24, 2011 at 9:48 am

Glad to know I’m not the only totally irritated by the flunky. I think Marc could have done a much better job if the guy hadn’t been there. I think that guy was part of the reason why the interview was almost ONLY about Carrot Top being crapped on by other comics. Marc in the last 5 minutes trying to get some details on his family and stuff was kind of funny, but I’ll bet we could have gotten more of that otherwise, that we could have gone deeper. Carrot Top came off OK, but almost like he had some kind of defensive agenda, and the flunky trying to interrupt and sell the show the whole time didn’t help matters.

leah October 24, 2011 at 10:08 am

I hated the Charlie guy. That’s so funny that everyone else did too. I thought he would leave after Marc got to the house. Ugh, I say they have a redo.

Dan October 24, 2011 at 10:18 am

Agreed with everyone above - Charlie was a nuisance and held this interview back. If he wasn’t there, I have a feeling the cosmetic surgery/steroid issue might have been broached a lot earlier on and discussed more thoroughly, and maybe Marc could have called bullshit on Carrot Top’s response to those questions.

Not that Marc’s doing investigative journalism here, and I’d hate to say that this interview ‘had no teeth’ since they’re not done in that spirit….but the message and scope of the conversation was fully controlled by Carrot Top and his people, which kind of killed what people love about these podcasts….the ‘unplugged’ honesty.

I have to figure this was, for Marc, a decision between having a Carrot Top interview on Carrot Top’s terms….or probably not having a Carrot Top interview at all.

This might just be me, and I don’t mean any offense, but my feeling is….next time, pass on interviews under these kinds of circumstances if they’re not going to produce the kind of conversation that are the reason people love the podcast. The guests don’t make the show…I like this podcast because of Marc and how he interviews people. Get ‘em in the garage and sweat the bullshit out of ‘em!

jamesllegade October 24, 2011 at 10:50 am

The jesus christ of comedians! Absolving all our hacky sins!

Maron was great in these less than ideal conditions that everyone has already addressed ad naseum. Marc knows that without CT and the broad audience he brings… hicks, carlin and he don’t exisit.  Without dumb you can’t have smart. Loved the end when marc pitched the propless Conan spot ala kaufman.  Loved that CT was totally on board and was already thinking about it.  That would be epic.

See you at the neptune Maron!

Shannon October 24, 2011 at 11:24 am

1-on-1 WTF podcasts are my fave but some of the panels w/audiences have been great too. This 2-person interview thing isn’t a good format for WTF. Even with the odd arrangement, I thought Carrot Top came off well.

Josh M October 24, 2011 at 2:09 pm

As others have mentioned, the candor of this interview was NOT up to par for WTF, but Carrot handled himself well….being called a hack and a clown every 2 minutes isn’t easy. He was obviously uncomfortable, but stayed ‘til the end. Nice one, MM.

Elly October 24, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Loved Carrot Top. Really wished Charlie would stop talking.  It must have been awkward for Carrot Top to just sit there listening to this opening act guy talking about him, in front of him, justifying things that doesn’t need justifying.
Aside from that I really enjoyed the interview.  CT is more down-to-earth than I expected he would be and I respect him much more after listening to him.

Catseye October 24, 2011 at 2:53 pm

I think it’s cool that Marc was willing to go to his interview subject instead of the other way around, I just don’t understand why so many people had to be present.  Was CT afraid to be alone with Marc?  Odd, but still interesting podcast.

Paul October 24, 2011 at 3:06 pm

Violent agreement with all on the bootlick toady and his incessant need to act as hype man third wheel excuse maker.  It was a horrible, intrusive dynamic.
WTF would have been well served to tell Charlie to STFU.
That written, that Carrot Top required a sycophant to sit in on the interview and act as a sort of bumbling counselor and fluff boy is the message, right?
Charlie, like the muscle Carrot Top layered onto his body, is a means of insulation from the slings and arrows to which he has grown so accustomed.  CT needed his blanky.
Frustrating interview, Marc.  Thanks for giving it a go.  I suspect there was a great interview to be had, but the first and necessary layer you had to peel back weighed 180 pounds and wouldn’t shut the fuck up.
BTW, Google an image pic of Charlie Viracola.  Yeah.  Exactly.  He’s THAT guy.

Ben October 24, 2011 at 3:09 pm

guess Im not the only one wishing this had been a more intimate interview, it felt like a missed opportunity, though I dont think Marc is to blame because it seemed like CT didnt have the proper environment for such an interview to take place.  Oh well, Im hoping maybe theres a follow up interview in the future.

Multigrain Shitsnack October 24, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Marc riffing on material Carrot Top could do was hilarious smile  Did anyone else get the vibe that after Scott heard a few of Marc’s ideas, he was quietly considering firing Charlie and hiring Marc to write his stuff?  Would never happen, but it’s pretty interesting to think about.  There were a lot of “oh I like that.  That’s really good.”

Crate&Trauma; October 24, 2011 at 4:28 pm

I wish someone could have told Charlie Viracola to shut the fuck up.  But hey I guess this was a close Marc was going to get with Carrot Top.  I dug it even with all the interruptions.

Bob October 24, 2011 at 4:57 pm

I also agree that Charlie was completely intrusive and seriously fucked up what could’ve been a great interview.  I was okay with him at first, but by the end he was just such a pathetic bootlicking fuck I wanted to smack the computer.

dave sootay October 24, 2011 at 5:07 pm

I’m at the 13:00 minute mark. Maron just asked the opening act what new props they’re working on. And then I’m sure he wished he had not asked. So bad. Cringeworthy. I almost had to take off my headphones.

kevin October 24, 2011 at 5:25 pm

I’m gonna go against the grain and say that i don’t think charlie ruined the show. He didn’t really help, but he also didn’t fuck everything up. And this is coming from a guy who gets irritated when mark starts eating during the show.

Frank October 24, 2011 at 6:47 pm

This would have been a great video interview. Carrot Top is a clown. Carrot Top is not a funny clown.  Carrot Top is not funny.  Carrot Top has never been funny.  Carrot Top always has the crack of his ass hanging out.  Even the crack of Carrot Top’s ass is not funny.  How do unfunny creepy clowns like Carrot Top get to be rich and famous?  It just amazes me how anybody could sit for an hour or two watching this unfunny prop clown.

Tim October 24, 2011 at 8:38 pm

This was an interesting interview and I don’t think it made a damn bit of difference whether that Charlie dude was there or not. Carrot Top obviously has some issues and I don’t think he was completely honest in this interview—and I don’t think any circumstances would have changed that.

Maybe he gets a lot chemical skin treatments and maybe he was ingesting something that HE didn’t think was a steroid—people can walk around with an enormous amount of cognitive dissonance bouncing around in their head.  I remember reading about how devastated Bill Hicks was at the time he lost that award to CT. But we also have to remember - Bill Hicks’ legend only got bigger after his death. He was not an American darling. He was more loved in England during his life.

Christobelle October 25, 2011 at 1:06 am

Holy hell balls!  It is so nice that others are echoing my feeling that the episode would have been so much better if Carrot Top didn’t have his super protective girl friend jumping in every few minutes.  Funny that he even mentioned that Howard Stern locked him away during the Stern version of the Carrot Top interview.  Scott-Top is actually smart.  And funny.  And delightful.  And almost as self-aware and self-depricating as Maron himself….. almost.  He’s working on his level of self-hate.  And you have to admire a guy for his work on hyphenates alone.

Jim October 25, 2011 at 1:25 am

Scott didn’t seem to enjoy Charlie’s intrusions, and occasionally tried to downplay the obvious exaggerations he would offer up.  In spite of all, Scott comes off as a legitimately funny, friendly, self-aware guy.  I genuinely LOLed at “Once they fuck with me, they all die.”  I have to say, though, it’s ridiculous that he claims not to have had any facial work done when he obviously has.

Beelzebud October 25, 2011 at 1:44 am

All I’m going to say is I’ll bet that was one of the oddest evening’s of Maron’s life.  ROFL….

Joe Tily October 25, 2011 at 2:31 am

Two’s company, three’s a crowd - - - other than that it was an interesting interview.  Great to hear about his encounters with Hicks and Carlin . . . .

Justin October 25, 2011 at 8:00 am

Carrot Top really has gotten non-stop abuse at the hands of the ‘real comedians’ for years now and it is good to see the kind of ‘thinker/anger mind trip comics’ like Marc can admit that these guys are good at ‘their thing’ for what they do. Which is fine. It’s not my comedy choice either but respect that is his specialty and he does it well.

Scott seems like a really cool guy, very ‘real’, sounds so professional to me (in the good sense of the term) and I was surprised how much I enjoyed this…

........despite SOMEONE ELSE CHIMING IN CONSTANTLY AND DOING NEITHER SCOTT, NOR MARC, NOR US LISTENERS ANY FAVOURS.

Although… I loved that Marc got some hostility back in his voice near the end. Why does Maron do that I dont know but I love it anyways!

RB October 25, 2011 at 8:58 am

If the two are a comedy team, then maybe it’s only right to interview both of them at the same time. I think it’s somewhat admirable of Carrot Top to let a person who has been an intricate part of his act get some recognition and spotlight. He doesn’t seem to have an ego and is willing to collaborate. I think that’s cool. It would be interesting, moreover, to see if Carrot Top takes some chances, as discussed, to evolve his act. He doesn’t have to do that in Vegas, but maybe a smaller club or short spot on TV. However, people will always come out to see the props; that’s the expectation for him. He’d piss a lot of the audience off if he didn’t have at least a few props.

Mikey October 25, 2011 at 9:15 am

While I didn’t love “yes-man Charlie,” I was at least glad that someone was there to talk CT back off the ledge. I felt like he was about to slit his wrists the whole time. Fascinating interview.

Seriously, how cold-hearted are WTF fans. Y’all are like, “How dare he mitigate the soul-crushing misery of our enemy!! LET HIM BURN!!” I love you guys.

UltimateOutsider October 25, 2011 at 9:46 am

My own sense about the situation is that Charlie manipulated Scott into this situation, knowing that with Carrot Top’s reputation he’d look like a douche for NOT letting Charlie be there. It’s my impression that being on WTF is a pretty big deal for comics these days- and Charlie took full advantage of the opportunity. It seems like lots of Marc’s guests have brought friends along for interviews, but I don’t ever remember a case of someone from the entourage so fully dominating the conversation. Has Marc publicly explained the circumstances anywhere? Because if not, I think it’s telling that he doesn’t bill this as the “Carrot Top and Charlie Viracola” interview, and that Charlie’s not mentioned in the summary at the top of this page. Like nearly everyone else here, I still think CT managed to come out of this looking sympathetic, but I’m pretty sure things could have gotten deeper without the interference.

chaz fantastic October 25, 2011 at 1:44 pm

In a nutshell,  Marc Maron was not going to be happy until CT admitted he was unhappy with the cost of his success.  CT seems either oblivious to his standing in the world or just doesn’t care.  Often times that much money can make you not really give a shit.

Chalk this one up to a missed opportunity

Crate&Trauma; October 25, 2011 at 4:08 pm

In a nutshell, you got it wrong Chaz.  But thanks for trying to sum it up for the rest of us.

Sam Thomas October 25, 2011 at 7:48 pm

CT does sound like a decent guy, and I hate to echo the choir but Charlie was a real wrench in the works. I wonder if CT has become one of those celebrities so entrenched by his entourage that his identity has begun to wane. If that’s the case, then I think Marc really needs to get his red headed ass in the garage. There’s surely an interesting story behind the man. From what I could gleam from behind Charlies awfulnness, CT is a funny, reflective, sensitive guy. And Marc is just the type of person he should be talking to. I’m always impressed by Maron’s capability to find common ground. I could basically hear the gears of dysfunction grinding in his head when CT mentioned his dad. God, I just wanted Charlie to get diarrhea, or a sneeze attack, of receive an urgent text that one of his racist masks needed immediate attention and have to leave. Get Scott in the garage, give him some Just Coffee .coop, and get down to it.

Also, it does not seem fair go speculate on the question of plastic surgery and steroids. It’s his own business. But damn, would it be nice to hear the darkness behind Carrot Top? No Charlie. Jesus no Charlie please. And let’s get that Marc Maron written Carrot Top set going. I’d love to see what props they come up with to represent self loathing and resentment.

gmoney October 25, 2011 at 10:02 pm

Seemed like there was a great interview buried somewhere, ruined by the one guy shouting that the best dig was somewhere else every so often. Weird episode. I’d really like to hear Carrot Top interviewed without his support man making it so very clear he thought his sugar daddy needed his protection. CT was coming off very well without

Beth October 25, 2011 at 11:11 pm

MULLIGAN! Totally need to get Carrot Top solo. Charlie was very distracting. This podcast had so much potential, but was a real let down b/c Charlie was there always interrupting or kissing CT’s ass. Marc and CT one on one would be phenomenal. Do it! So much left unsaid. Marc had to be disappointed as well.

Grant F Johnson October 26, 2011 at 1:20 am

This Charlie interview was awesome, his knowledge on all thing Carrot Top related is unmatched.  When CT kicks the bucket $20.00 says Charlie will write a book title, the “Prop Master how I controlled Carrot Top from behind the scenes”. I often listen to these interview a few times, this one doesn’t make the cut, but you were amazing as usual Marc.  This Charlie sounds like he is protecting CT, which seems odd.  Does anyone remember at looney tunes bit with the Big Dog, and the Little Dog and the little one follows the big one around calling him boss, asking what a going to get into next…...  I bet when nobodies around that is Charlie and Top

mike gibbons October 26, 2011 at 1:35 am

Please get carrot top on the phone for a one on one. Charlie seems like a nice guy, but inadvertently fucked the shit out of this interview… In a bad way.

Tom October 26, 2011 at 2:06 pm

at one point released a 12” EP, and the cover of this was a close-up of a giant spread asshole, and the record was called “The Ian MacKaye EP.” I don’t know those guys. I’ve never met those guys, or I had not met them at the time; I may have met one of them since then. I didn’t have any problem with them. I didn’t know anything about them. But that was, you know, “Hey! What did I do!? What did I do to deserve THAT?” And at some point I read an interview with them where they said, “Well, you know -” Or no, actually I think the guy that was distributing it contacted me and sent me a copy of it. And he said, “We just wanted to let you know that we weren’t going to hide this from you. We did this and we’re not trying to hurt your feelings; it’s really aimed at the people who think you’re a God.” And I can’t say that it hurt my feelings, because I just thought, “This is so ridiculous!” But it does actually make me feel bad, because it’s just such a pointless exercise. You know, fight crime; don’t fight nice guys! What the fuck did I do? Furthermore, they did not understand—and I think that people who often do this sort of tactic like “Well, it’s not really about you; it’s about the people who worship you,” this sort of thing—what they don’t understand is that by assailing me, by throwing stones at me or my name, if they don’t think that they are injuring me, then they must think I’m impervious. They must think I’m a God! So in fact they are reinforcing the notion that I am not a human being, because they are taking shots of me and expecting me to not fall. Do you follow?

Justin October 26, 2011 at 9:08 pm

Marc, you deserve TOP PROPS for keeping your GAGS down during this interview. Also, do you like CARROTS?

Carrot top and Charlie: what a combo to headshrink.

Connor November 07, 2011 at 1:34 am

so, carrot top has a human prop…after you think about that for a minute you look into the mirror and say, ‘well, duh.’

marvin November 07, 2011 at 6:48 am

what i learned from this interview: despite great fortune and considerable fame if you are emotionally dusted from decade(s) of being a human punchline to most of your peers and the general public you might truly appreciate (if not Need) a sidekick yes-man to keep a literally-constant positive spin on things.

and despite the fact that this was distracting from the interview i still learned more about CT than i thought i would going in. (and he seems quite cool)

thanks for another great listen marc

Ian November 10, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Charlie - stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking, stop talking.

Chris Taylor November 11, 2011 at 8:36 pm

I’m going to disagree with the people who say this is the worst WTF ever.  Quite honestly it really should be a psychological study, giving a rare glimpse into the entourage of a Vegas performance artist (and I use that word very loosely).  I have never heard such an ass sucking brown-noser in my life!  How fucking embarrassing.  The best line was when Mark said “Charlie left the room, let’s talk about him . . . ”  And Carrot even got a little jab in when whilst discussing obsessive fans he told Mark “You’re sitting across from one” (indicating Charlie).  Truer words have not been spoken.

I’m not a fan of prop comedy at all, but I wouldn’t mind a real honest to God garage interview with Carrot BY HIMSELF . . . but only if he opens up and get’s honest (cause let’s face it, that there face has seen massive amounts of botox at the very least).  He seems like a likable guy overall, but he seriously needs to stop worrying about trying to make everyone like him.

Oh, and Marc, your Conan bit would be Carrot Top’s saving grace, if only he had the balls to do it . . . unfortunately I’m afraid they’re buried too deep inside Charlie’s mouth at this point! wink

Love your show Marc. but I have to say, you didn’t have a single positive question to ask
Carrot Top.  I think you went in somewhere between defensive and aggressive, as if you were risking looking bad yourself for doing this interview. You started off putting Charlie on the defensive by basically saying over and over “would you have ever imagined sinking so low professionally?” Then, with Carrot Top himself, your entire line of questioning was about people shitting on him, with a little about how he should change his act. Honestly, it would have been nice if you’d done some more about his background. his approach to comedy, etc…the kind of respect you give to just about every other guest you have on.  Even though you got more gentle with him as you went along, if I were Carrot Top, I’d have been really depressed by this interview. I think you owe him a re-do.  And yes, that Charlie guy didn’t help matters, so a one-on-one would be better.
