Hey, Marc - this is OT, but I found this article interesting, and I think you will, too. For example, a cat can be lost (and huddled in fear) just a few houses down… for days.

This might be one of the best since Norm MacDonald. Fascinating, but I admit I already have a deep curiosity about Russian culture. I also found Yakov to be very forthcoming and non-defensive about his country. Many Russians I’ve spoken to immediately got on the defensive when I asked about the harsh realities of their background, as if I, a Canadian, was putting down their homeland. I didnt sense this from Yakov at all. The Department of Jokes was very interesting, but not surprising considering some of the books I’ve read about Russia, like the Gulag Archipelago. Great interview.

I loved this interview. I enjoyed Smirnoff’s work many years ago but had basically forgotten about him until your chat. And then he blows my mind—and I was a psych major and the son of multiple psychiatrists (I shit you not)—with his two simple comments about (1) how a woman wants a man who makes her laugh and a man wants a woman who will laugh at his jokes AND (2) how a woman wants a man who loves her while a man wants a woman who respects him. Wow. Kinda nailed it with those two.
That’s not to say I don’t want to be loved—I do, and the lack of love was probably what led to the dissolution of my 19-year marriage—but the respect part is huge.
Great interview as always, and hats off to Smirnoff. I’m glad he’s still doing well.
