Dispatches from the Head

Biscuits & Gravy.

Hey, friends-

This week is the big Magner’s Comedy Festival in Boston. I’m doing a live WTF and a standup show on Friday Jan. 27th. There are still a few tickets if you want to come out. It’s going to be a good time. The following week I will be doing another live WTF at Sketchfest in San Francisco on Friday Feb. 3 along with some other shows.

For those of you that are relatively new to the show and you want access to the earlier episode you can always get a premium app subscription or there are some select episodes available at iTunes for purchase at WTF Premium. You can also pick up my new CD if you want on iTunes. If you get it at the site I will sign if for you.

I just want to thank you all again for all the love that came the way of the show for the Todd Glass episode. It was a big deal for him and the support that flowed his way was amazing.

I’m sitting in a hotel in Atlanta. It’s a long week here but the shows have been great. I can’t eat anymore burgers, fried food or biscuits. When you are down here, no matter where you are, you are within a mile or two of Biscuits and Gravy. You could be walking down the street and ask someone, “Hey, where can I get some good Biscuits and Gravy?” They would say, “Well, you can go down the street here a bit or you can come on in and I’ll fix you some.” Sweet people down here. Honestly.

I know now that there really aren’t that many healthy places to eat here because the last few times I’ve been here and hit this wall on the last day. Someone always brings me to the same healthy restaurant called RJ Thomas. It is an odd place that has a bunch of cage tropical birds out front. There are literally a Toucan, Cockatoos and a Macaw or two outside this place as you walk in. The place itself looks like a very small circus from the street. This time I was here I fully realized just how high you have to wave that freak flag to get it above the Confederate flag on that poll. Love the renegade progressive south when I can find it.

Ralphie May is on Monday’s show and I think we had a very intense, loaded conversation about comedy and overcoming hardship in life. Very engaging and revealing talk. On Thursday Paul Feig, the creator of Freaks and Geeks and the director of Bridesmaids, brings it to the garage with a very candid and intelligent talk about comedy, his work, Christian Science, show biz and living with some personal issues that are daunting. This is a comedy nerd dream chat. Great guy. Enjoy.

Love,
Maron

I’ve really got no idea where you get this “Confederate flagpole “stuff. Atlanta is the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement. Atlanta has the largest gay population on the East coast outside of New York. The mayor, most of the city council and the police chief in this “Confederate flagpole” town are all African-American. The firehoses and German Shepherds were put away about 50 years ago, Maron, back where your perceptions seem to be stuck.

Yes, where there’s racial diversity there will be racial friction. Zoot Suit Riots? Watts riots? Rodney King? Crown Heights? Those didn’t happen in Alabama, they happened in the more “enlightened” areas you seem to favor.

I love biscuits and gravy, but you also stereotype that every place here is a biscuit and gravy joint, as if you had no choice. We’ve got everything from Dominican to Indian to Cuban cuisine where I live, and I’m not even downtown.

Did you even leave your hotel room, or did you sit inside with your eyes closed and imagine Klansmen and lynchings outside your door? I understand comedians have to paint in broad strokes but this arrogant, narrow view you have is really wearing.

Saw the Friday show at Laughing Skull. Enjoyed the hell out of it.

Holy shitballs. Someone needs a cookie.

So yeah, next time: guilt free burgers and no exotic birds. It’ll be worth getting your pants out of the freezer for.

We need a skunklet update.

Another Atlanta Fan, moved to write in Marc’s defense: yes indeed, Atlanta is the home of the Civil Rights Movement (or at least of MLK), we are a lonely blue island swimming in a vast sea of Georgia red, gayest city in the South, John Lewis is my congressman, and proud we are. BUT: even in my super-duper liberal neighborhood, there is an elderly gentleman who regularly jogs around the park across the street from my house holding aloft a big Confederate battle flag. So, yeah, this city has a weird relationship to the past. Don’t we all.

And food! Truly it’s not as easy to eat healthy here as it is in L.A., but we do better than biscuits. This here’s the home of the hipster gourmandized farm-to-table meat and three. Next time you come around this way, Marc, I’ll recommend a few tasty restaurants; you might even be able to eat Paleo, as long as you’re willing to eat pigfat. Mmm, pigfat.

Enjoyed the show Marc. It was my first at the Laughing Skull. Looks like a fun place to perform as well as see performances. I’m glad I made the trip down and I’m planning on more visits. Looks like Maria Bramford will be a good show to catch in March.

Might try seeing her without the extra “r” though. Never know. I like a challenge.

Yes, a cookie, or perhaps a shot of rum. Or both! Sorry about that outburst, everybody. I just get sensitive about the “racist hillbillies” sign that is so often hung on our city and region, and when I felt like Marc was doing it, too, I was disappointed. My popping off like that was certainly overboard and uncalled for, though. Sorry again, everyone.

As always, great stuff Marc.

Will be at the Wilbur on 1/27 at the 7:00 show.  Can’t wait.

POW!

Loved the Paul Feig interview.  The part about Tourettes was so interesting, I really wish it had come up sooner.  As the parent of an Autistic child I especially liked how you talked about it.  I am new to the podcast and am gorging myself on it as much as possible.

EC:  Since you are new to the podcast, and you mention you have an autistic child, you might want to check out Episode 218 - Jack Gallagher.  About half way through he talks about his autistic son.  Great episode.

I live about two hours south of Atlanta, came to one of the shows, and there was actually a Confederate flag march on main street like two weeks ago here.

In a large pot, add sausage and cook until browned and cooked through. Drain grease and add flour to sausage. Cook over medium-high heat until the sausage is well-coated with the flour.
